Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM T. CARROLL, OF MEDWA Y, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN RING FOR SPINNING-FRAME.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 89,025, dated April 20, 1869.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM T. CARROLL, of Medway, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have made a new and useful invention having reference to the Rings of Ring and Traveler Spinning-Machines or Frames; and I do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a top view, and Fig. 2 a vertical section, of a ring and its supporter or rail as provided with my invention.
The nature of my invention consists in a traveler-ring made with two races, arranged in manner as hereinafter explained, with clampscrews and a supporter or ring-rail.
My improved ring costs no more to construct than an ordinary ring having a single race, and in fact, in many cases, can be made for less, and thus it will save nearly, if not entirely, the cost of such a ring when replacement of it by another may become necessary, for with my duplex race-ring, when one race may become so worn as to be unfit for use with a traveler, it becomes necessary only to invert or turn over the ring, so as to bring upward the nnworn race.
In the drawin' gs, A denotes the ring as made with two traveler race-courses or races, a b, arranged at opposite ends of it, as represented.
In using this ring it is to rest on the rail B, or in a shallow socket or cavity, 0, arranged therein, the depth of the socket corresponding about with that of one of the races which is to go into it. This socket I usually make with a diameter a little larger than that of the race, in order to enable the ring to be moved laterally, and centralized with respect to the spine.
I screw down into the ring-rail or supporter B a series of clamp-screws, d d d, so arranged that their heads may overlap and rest on the lower race, in manner as represented in the drawings, such clamp-screws serving to confine the ring to the rail or supporter B.
I make no claim to providing for the adjustment of the rings in the rail of a spinningframe, by making the holes in the rail for the reception of such rings larger than the exteriors of the portions of the rings which are received within them, and applying adjustingscrews in combination with the holes and rings, substantially as and for the purpose specified in the United States Patent No. 39,657, as I have no screws so applied to the ring as to effect its movement when any one or more ot them are in revolution. The screws I use simply clamp the ring down to the rail.
I am aware that in an application for a patent made by Samuel Brooks, March 11, 1840,
a box or ring provided with internal and external grooves is represented; but no method is shown of applying such ring to the ring-rail, except it be by a clasp of wire to go about it, and project from and be screwed to the rail. Nor is any means of adjusting or clamping such a ring on the ring-rail, and with reference to the spindle, shown in such application.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the ring made with two races, as described, the socketed ring-rail, and the clamp-screws for holding said ring to the rail, the whole being constructed and arranged as and for the purposes shown and specified.
W. T. CARROLL.
