Be it known that I, Svnn Romson- SCHMIDT, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Fairground, Long Island, in the county of Suflolk and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Medical Appliances, of which the following is a specification. I v

This invention relates to improvements in the construction of medical ap liances for the treatment of venereal and ot 1er diseases of the female sexual organs, such as gonorrhea, gleet, leucorrhea, womb displacement and other diseases peculiar to such organs, the object in view being to provide a device which may be impregnated with proper medicaments and applied to bring the medicament in direct contact with the affected part, and which will readily absorb and retain. all discharges and may be conveniently cleansed, without losing its efficency, for repeated use.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the same.

Referring to the drawing, 1 designates a cup-shaped body or receptacle formed of some suitable impervious elastic or flexible material, such as rubber, fish or animal bladder, prepared paper, etc., said body or receptacle having its edge turned to provide a hollow elastic circular rim 3. This body is covered inside and out by a body 4 of absorbent material of a structure and character to be readily impregnated with a medicament, to take up all discharges, and to be readily cleansed without injury. Threads of prepared rawv silk (silk floss) are preferably used, but threads of cotton or other soft absorbent material may be employed. These threads are'arranged in one or more layers and in parallel relation and folded or spun centrally over the rim 3 and their ends are extended down upon the outer and inner sides of the impervious body 1, with the inner end portions projecting downward through the opening 2, the extremities of the ends being gathered below the bottom of the cup or impervious body and secured by a tie 5 in the form of a tuft 6. The threads are also secured immediately below the rim 3 by a binding thread 6 extending through the inner and outer layers of the absorbent material and cup.

In practice, the absorbent material is saturated with a suitable curative, antiseptic and germ destroying medicament, and, after the vagina has been cleansed, the device is inserted with hollow part upward until the rim surface bears against the neck of the womb when it will spread out, covering the mouth of the womb entirely and bringing the medicated absorbent material into contact with all surfaces and securing a direct application of the medicament to the affected parts. All discharges from the thus supported womb will be received in the cup and absorbed by the absorbent material, and, through the overspun opening 2, conducted and concentrated in the highly absorbent (and bacteriakilling) tuft 6. Any discharge from the vagina will be absorbed bytuft 6 and retained out of contact with the womb, so that the latter can not be affected thereby. The tuft 6 thus constitutes a collector in commu nication with the receiving cup through the drain opening 2. In cases of displacement, the womb will be supported and relieved from strain so that a permanent cure, in the course of time, maybe effected The nature of the employed absorbent material and form of the rim 3 not only insures the production of a soft bearing surface to prevent injury to the organs but the construction described is such as to allow the device to be repeatedly cleansed in soap and water, without impairing its general efficiency or absorbent qualities of the absorbent material. Furthermore the elasticity of the body and absorbent covering, softer than the mucous membrane, enables the appliance to be worn without inconvenience. After cleansing, the floss is allowed to dry and may then be combed to its normal shape and fluffy condition.

Having thus described my invention what I claim is:

1. A medical appliance for the purpose described comprising a cup shaped body formed with an opening in the bottom thereof, said body being provided with a sheathing consisting of strands or threads of silk-floss or the like covering the rim of the cup and having their inner and outer ends respectively extending down upon and covering the inner and outer sides of the body, the extremities of the inner ends of the threads being passed downward through the opening and the extremities of both portions of the threads being gathered below the bottom of the cup and tied in form of a tuft of less diameter than the body.

2. A medical appliance for the purpose described, comprising a cup-shaped flexible body having an outwardly projecting elastic rim increasing its diameter at the top and formed with an opening in the bottom thereof, said body being provided with a soft sheathing consisting of threads or strands of silk-floss or the like covering the rim with their inner and outer ends respectively extending down upon and covering the inner and outer sides of the body, the extremities of the inner ends of the threads being passed downward through the opening and the eX tremities of both portions of the threads gathered below the bottom of the body and tied in form of a tuft of less diameter than the body.
