Description

genital gtatet @Cd-Patent @fitte-.@- Meme-M 'm' e A. D. WILCOX, OF vMANLIUS, NEW YORK.
Leners Parent No. 88,828, dazed .4pm-113, 1869.
IIKPROVEMENT IN GATES.
To all whom tt may concern:
Be it known that I,A.D.W1LooX,-of Manlius, in the county of Onondaga, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hanging Gates; and I do hereby declare that'the following is a full, clear, and-exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming partof this specification, in Which- Figure l is a front view of a gate having my improvement.
Figure 2 is a cross-.section of the same, taken in the line :c x in g. 1.
Figures 3, 4, 5, and 6 are detail views.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in all the figures.
This invention relates vto that class of gates which are opened partiallyby a sliding movement, and then swung fully open; and
The invention consists mainly in an improved construction of hinges, 'whereby both movements of the gate are obtained with the greatest facility, as hereinafter explained.
In the accompanying drawings- A is the gate, and
B b, the posts.
The lower vhinge of the gate is formed by a rim, O, (see sectional viewiig. 5, and plan View fig. 6,) in which is supported a second rim, or ring, E, by means of a flange, c, on the loweredge of rim C.
The rim C is cast with a screw-spur, or bolt, C', by
which it vis secured firmly to the post B.
The rim E is placed loosely in the rim O, so as to be turned freely therein, and is'provided with two notches, e e, g. 6.
'Within the rim E is suspended a flanged roller, F, the gudgeons of said roller having bearings in the said rim E. When the gate is pushed back, in making the first opening-movement, it rolls on the roller F, and then, when the gate is swung, the lower board engages with the sides of notches e e, to turn the rim E within the outer rim C. A plain roller, Without flanges, can be used in this hinge, as the notches e e will keep the roller in the proper position, relatively with the gate, without the use of flanges on said roller F, although these flanges are necessary in the upper hinge.
screw-spur, or bolt, D', as seen in Iig. 3, for securing-it to post B, and has an internal annular groove, d, for holding the gudgeons of the roller F, as shown in fig. 2, and, after the sliding movement has been made, in opening the gate, the upper board of the gate engages with the tlanges f fof the roller, and causes its gudgeons to traverse the annular groove d, and thus the roller is made t-o follow the swinging-movement of the gate.
The gudgeons" of the roller are inserted by firstl placing one gudgeon into the groove al, and then in serting the other through a notch, h, iig. 3.
movement, when nearly closed, a roller, H, is set in the ground between the Vposts B b, as shown in iig. 1.
To open the gate, it is` rst run back on the rollers until it is about balanced on its hinges, and it then receives a swinging-movement, to fully open the gate.
The hinges are cast complete, and require no litting. By these means, I produce hangings which are cheaply made, and which work in an ecient and satisfaotory manner. Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The hinges D l F f and O c Ev F, constructed as shown in ig. 2, and, in connection therewith,- the balancing-roller H, as and for the purpose set forth.
The above specification of my invention, signed by me, this 22d day of December, 1868.
A. D. WILGOX. AVVit-nesses:
WM. J. DODGE,-
F. A. MoRLEY.
The upper hinge is formed by a rim, D, cast with a.
To balance and sustain large gates, in the slidingrv
