Be it known that I, JOSEPH S'rnoorn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lyra, Texas, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Mud-Drums for Boilers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a boiler provided with a mud-drum constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 1s an enlarged view of the mud-drum; Fig. 3 1s a cross sectional vlew taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view showing a flange of slightly different construction from that shown in Fig. 4.
This invention relates to mud-drums for boilers.
I have herein shown my improved muddrum used in connection with a boiler of the Heine type such, for example, as that described in United States Patent No. 595,641, granted to E. D. Meier, and dated December 14, 1897. It should be understood, however, that my improved mud-drum is not limited in its use to boilers of the type described in the patent above referred to as it could be used with other types of boilers.
The main object of my invention is to provide a mud-drum which is so constructed that the sediment which collects therein cannot bank up at the end of the drum from which the blow-off pipe leads.
Another object of my invention is to provide a mud-drum having a detachable top or upper section that can be removed. so as to enable the interior of the drum to be thoroughly cleaned.
Referring to the drawings which illustrate the preferred form of my invention, A designates the main drum of the boiler, and B designates the mud-drum arranged inside of same. The feed water pipe 3 enters the front end of the mud-drum and the blow-oil pipe 4 leads from the rear end of said mudsurrounding the entrance to the blow-ofi.
If desired, the nmd-drum can consist of a one-piece cylinder but I prefer to form it in two sections 8 and 8 so that the upper section S can be removed to enable the interior of the drum to be thoroughly cleaned. The sections 8 and S of the mud-drum can be fastened together in various ways such, for example, as by providing each section with co-operating laterally projecting flanges 9 through which bolts 10 pass. The meeting faces of the flanges 9 can be planed oil so as to make a tight joint and, if desired, packing 11 can be arranged between said flanges, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
In Fig. 5 I have shown a slightly modified construction in which the lower section of the mud-drum is provided with channelshaped flanges 12 between the vertical legs of which the flanges on the upper section are arranged. The upper section 8 of the mud drum does not extend throughout the entire length of the drum but terminates adjacent the conical-shaped rear end 6, said conicalshaped end being formed in one piece, as shown in Fig. 2.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is:
1. A mud-drum for boilers, consisting of a horizontally arranged cylindrical-shaped member provided with an approximately conical-shaped end and also having a removable top or upper section; substantially as described.
2. A mud-drum for boilers, consisting of an upper section and a lower section arranged together to form a cylinder, the lower section being provided with an integral conicalshaped portion to which a blow-off pipe is connected substantially as described.
3. A mud-drum for boilers, consisting of a semi-cylindrical-shaped lower section providcd with an integral conical-shaped portion to which a bloW-ofl pipe is connected, an upper section of semi-cylindrical shape, laterally projecting flanges on said sections, and
fastening devices passing through said flanges to connect the sections together; substantially as described. I
4. A mud-drum for boilers consisting of an upper and lower section arranged together to form a cylinder, the lower section being provided with channel-shaped flanges, and the upper section being provided with laterally signature in the projecting flanges that are located between the channel-shaped flanges on the lower section; substantially as described.
