DETACHAB LE NEEDLE-SEPARATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 19, 1908.
Application filed May 22, 1907. Serial No. 375,163.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, FRANK F. WITKUS, a subject of Nicholas II, Czar of Russia, residing at No. 200 Wilson street, in Manchester,
in the county of Hillsborough and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and useful Detachable Needle-Separator as an Improvement to a Twoleedle Singer Cylinder Vamping-Machine.
My invention relates to a detachable needle separator, and particularly contemplates the provision of an attachment for the throat plates of sewing machines forming a part thereof and allowing for the ready and quick replacing of broken and damaged parts.
My invention further resides in forming the throat in three parts instead of in one part as ordinarily used, and constructing said parts to interlock in an improved manner to serve all the functions of the one-piece construction.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, in which,
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a throat plate constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a cross section taken therethrough on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows. Fig. 4 is a similar view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows. Fig. 5 is a central, longitudinal sectional view taken therethrough. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the slotted end of the throat plate broken away and with the attachments removed, and Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the needle block removed.
In the practical embodiment of my invention, I provide a throat plate 5, of conventional form, with a slotted opening 6, and with beveled inner edges 7 and curved beveled outer edges 8 at the sides of said opening 6, said inner beveled edges 7 having central projections 9 and being adapted for the reception of a needle block 10. The needle block 10 is provided with beveled side edges 11 and with central recesses 12 in said edges, to conform with and interfit the edges 7 and the projections 9 respectively, of the throat plate. The needle block 10 is formed of a curved plate, the curve of which is opposite to the curvature of the throat plate 5 when assembled therewith, and said needle block is provided with a pair of spaced needle openings 13 extending transversely therethrough and with a separator plate 14 extending downwardly therefrom between said openings, and slightly channeled adjacent thereto.
A locking block 15 is formed for engagement with the curved beveled outer edges 8 of the opening 6, being curved on one face corresponding to the curvature of the throat plate 5 to form an even outer surface therewith, and being curved on its opposite face to correspond with the concave surface of the needle block 10 and the curvature of the edges 8.
The needle block 10 and locking block 15 when placed as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, respectively engaging opposite sides of the edges of the opening 6, are adapted to be locked together by a headed stud-bolt 16 counter sunk within and extending through an opening in said locking block 15 and threadedly engaging within an alined 0 ening 17 in the needle block 10. The 100 ing block 15 is further provided with needle openings 18 to aline with the needle openings 13 of the needle block 10.
From the foregoing description, it will be apparent that I provide a novel and useful device in which the component parts may be readily and quickly locked together when desired or released to allow of the insertion of a new part.
Having fully described my invention, I claim:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a throat plate, a needle block interfitting therewith, and a locking block having means to detachably clamp said throat plate, said needle block and itself together, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of a throat plate having a slotted opening, a needle block formed to engage the material of said throat plate and one face thereof adjacent said opening, and a locking blockformed to engage the material of said throat plate on the opposite face thereof and having means to detachably clamp the said elements together, substantially as described.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination of a throat plate having a slotted opening provided with oppositely beveled edges, a needle block formed to engage the said beveled edges adjacent one face of said throat plate, and a locking block formed to engage the said beveled edges adjacent the opposite face of said throat plate and having means to detachably clamp the said elements together, substantially as described.
4. In a device of the character described, the combination of a throat plate, a needle block interfitting therewith, and a locking block said elements together, said needle bloc being provided with needle openings therethrough and having a separator plate extending therefrom between said openings, substantially as described.
5. In a device of the character described, the combination of a throat plate, a needle block interfitting therewith, and a locking block interfitting with said throat plate on having means to detachably clam the opposite side thereof to said needle block, and having means to detachably clamp said needle block, said needle block having needle openings therethrough' and having a separator plate extending therefrom between said openings, and said locking block having needle openings to aline with the said open ings of said needle block, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRANK F. WVITKUS.
