To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN G. ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Rockhill, in the county of York and State of South Carolina, have invented a new and.

Improved Hanger for Vehicle Bodies, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to hangers for the bodies of vehicles such as light buggies, runabouts and similar vehicles. As hangers of this type are usually constructed, it is necessaryto provide them, near their ends, with openingsfor the bolts of the clips which at tach them to the springs. These openings weaken the hanger at this point and are the cause of many breakages.

The object of the invention is to produce a hanger of special construction which is adapted to overcome the defect referred to above and to relieve the clips of the weight of the hanger to which they are ordinarily subjected.

The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter, and particularly se forth in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective illustrating the invention; and Fig. 2 is also a perspective showing a portion of the hanger upon an enlarged scale, certain parts being broken away.

Referring more particularly to the parts, 1, 1 represent the side springs which connect at their forward ends to the bolster 2, and at their rear ends to the rear axle 3. At or near their middle points, the rear axle 3 and the bolster 2 are connected by a reach span 4, which consists of a flat metal bar of steel or similar material, which is slightly bowed upwardly, near its middle portion, as shown. The hanger further comprises a centrally disposed frame 5, of rectangular form, the sai frame being formed into two sections 6 and 7. These sections have parallel bars which overla as shown, and which are attached by suitable clips 8 to the reach span 4. as shown. The ends of the hanger sections 6 and 7 adjacent to the springs 1, 1, are offset upwardly so as to present substantially enlargements or shoulders 14.

At the middle point of each of the shoes 10, a keeper plate 12 is attached by a rivet 13 or a similar fastening device. This plate is of rectangular shape, to conform to the outline of the shoe, except that it is shorter than the shoe, and formed at its ends into Clips 15 are applied adjacent to the shoulders 14, and are held in position thereby, the said clips being of the usual form, comprising U-bolts 16, the legs of which extend downwardly in order to enable the caps 17 to be applied to the under sides of their springs. The body is attached to the bars of the hanger in any suitable manner. The bolster 2 is connected with the forward axle 18 by the usual means.

Special attention is called to the fact that the clips 15 are not subjected to the weight of the body of the vehicle, which is supported on the hanger. The only strain to which they are subjected is that incident to the clamping action, which prevents the hanger from shifting longitudinally on the springs.

Having. thus described my invention, I claim as-new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

In a hanger construction, in combination, side springs, a hanger disposed transversely between said-springs and having upwardly offset extremities forming angular pockets receiving said springs, and substantially flat shoes lying upon the upper faces of said springs, keeper plates attached respectively to said shoes on the upper sides thereof, and clips fastened around said springs and said shoes, and seating on said kee er plates, said keeper plates having means or holding said clips in position.
