Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CAMILLUs SENNE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, city and county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Tape-Moistening Machines, 0 which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to' a device for moistening strips or webs of flexible material, and is es ecially designed to moisten the adhesive si e of gummed tape such as is made of aper or cloth.

Sue of the objects of the invention is to rovide such a device in which the tape in t e form of a roll is contained and wherein the tape can be withdrawn and unwound as withdrawn, and in which means are provided for moistening the gummcd side of the tape as withdrawn from the device.

A further object is to provide a suitable receptacle for containing a considerable quantity of water for supplying a suitable bibulous member, such as a sponge, that will moisten the tape as it is drawn from the holder.

In the accompanying drawing representing an embodiment of my invention Figure 1 shows the device in erspective, a art of the receptacle being bro en away to s ow its interior. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through a portion of the receptacle.

The device is shown. in the drawings as comprising a holder H of substantial cylindrical form set on its edge and supported by a suitable base B, the holder being adapted to contain a roll of tape T. If desired two small rolls can be laced side by side in the holder. The eriphery P of the holder has a slot at S and t e outer end 6 of the tape T is carried outward through this slot.

A suitable rece tacle is provided for containing water, and one portion of the receptacle extends in proximity to the gummed ta e, preferably below the same, and is provi ed with a bibulous member partly located in the receptacle to be saturated with the water, and partly located to have one face of the tape drawn out from the holder. In the construction illustrated a receptacle R is shown in the form of an elongated tube 1- secured to one side of the holder H, b brack ets 'n, and 1) soldered to the tube; an havin an arm m extending across the periphery o the holder with its free end closed. At the upper art of the arm is a slot or opening t in whic is located a bibulous body, such as a sponge w, that pro'ects down into the water and is saturated t ereb The upper part of the sponge is locate in a line with the slot S, or a short distance below the same. As the tape T is drawn out from the holder its lower gummed face will bear against the I top of the sponge and will be properly moistened. The receptacle R at its other end may be provided with an n ward extension that has a suitable cap C, w ereby the receptacle can be conveniently filled with water from time to time. But it will be observed that the receptacle is of considerable capacity and will keep the s onge saturated for a considerable length 0 time until it is practically exhausted.

A suitable cutter may be provided, in the form of a strip D having a serrated edge 05, and located a short distance above the tape. After the tape-has been properly moistened it may be drawn upward against the toothed edge, that will sever the lengthof tape.

It will be seen that the device affords means for practically moistening the tape in an automatic manner as unwound from the roll in which it is supplied. Furthermore just suflicient tape is moistened as is needed for actual use. And the device will remain operative for a considerable period of time because ofthe large capacity of the receptacle for the water, that kee s the sponge moistened and saturated, an is therefore, always ready for use. It will also be seen that the device has no moving parts, and that it is very simple and economical of construction.

. Having described my invention I claim:

The combination with a cylindrical holder for containing a roll of tape and having a slot in the periphery at one side through which the tape is drawn from the roll as unwound, a receptacle comprising an elongated ortion secured at one side of the holder, and aving a projectin portion extending across the periphery of t e holder below the said slot, said projecting portion having an opening in its top, a, sponge located in said opening and extending down into the Waterfsaid receptacle being positioned with the sponge located ad- 5 jacent the opening slot in the holder to enage the lower face of the tape as drawn out Fmm the holder through the slot.
