the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to 'make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in sash fasteners, and is especially designed as an improvement over my sash fastener, for which Letters-Patent were granted August The object of the invention is to provide a device of .this character by which either or both the up er and .lower sashes may be locked in a c osed'or partly opened position.

A further object is to provide a sashlfastener-'of this character which will be of simple construction, efficient, and easily operated,

. and which may be readily applied tothe sash of the' Window without cutting away any partthereof. I

A further object. is to provide a fastener which cannot be opened or tampered with from the outside, except b'y breakingthe glass -of one orthe othervof the sashes.

Referring more particularly to the draw- 1 indicates the window frame, 2 the lowersash, and r3 the-upper. sash of said Window frame. A bearing plate 4, preferably of rectangular form, having a central transverse opening 5, and two transverselyk disposed recesses 6 in its upper face, extendvling from the ends of said opening toits side '."edges, is removably fastened by screwsl or other equivalent means to the upper rail of the lower sash.

In order that thepawl or arm 10 may be normally'- held in engagement withl the ratchet teeth 12 on thecbar 13, a spring 15 is provided, said springhaving one end partly encircling the intle 6 and bearingavainst the lower end ofD the pawl 1() and secured7 at its opposite end to the bottom or under face of the bearing plate 4 by screwsor other equivalentnieans. The tendency of said spring 15 is to normally force. the upper end of the pawl into Aengagement with the ratchet teeth 12'.

lSecured'to the outer side'of the pawl 10 near the upper end of the same, is the up er end of a short chain 17, to the lower endp of which is'secured an aperture'd catch plate 18.'

This 1plate is adapted to engage with a screw or ot 1er suitable rojection 19, which is secured to the rail o? the lower sash, and when so engaged, will hold the pawl 10 out'of engagement with the ratchet teeth 12 of the vertically disposed bar 13, and thus permit the window sashes to be raised or lowered.

The lower end of said plate 18 is curvedslightly outward to form a handle, whereby the saine may engage or disengage with the screw or projection 19. A second pawl 20 is pivotally connected at its lower end to the :outer end ofthe bearing late 4 in any suitable nianner, and is beve ed at its upper or opposite end to forni a wedge-shaped edge ada ted to engage in a notch formed-near the ower or inner end of said first-mentioned pawl 10 and coacts' with the spring 15 to hold said pawl in secure engagement with the teeth of the vertically disposed bar 13.

A sash fastener comprising a bearing plate adapted to be fastened to the top rail of .a lower Window sash, a pintle dis ose/d transversely of the plate and mounten in its top, a pawl projecting laterally from the intle, a retaining plate secured to the top of tne hearing plate and arranged over the pintle to secure the latter in piace, a rack bar secured to the u per sash, a s ring carried by the'bearing plate to norma ly engage said pawl with the teeth ofsaid rack, and a finger pivoted to the bearing plate and i coectm with the spring to normally hold the paw in engage1 ment with the teeth of said. rack.
