Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMns E. WISE, a resident of Butler, in the county of Butler and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Well-Open ating Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
The primary object, of this invention is to provide improved mechanism located intermediate the engine and the walking beam for transmittim power to the latter, and also for operating adine or cable used for bailing and for ulling out rods, tubing, etc.
he improved mechanism includes a crank shaft for operating the walking beam, the shaft carrying a spool upon which the line for bailing and for pulling rods is wound, and geared to this crank shaft is a drive shaft. Means are provided for reversing the drive shaft, so that when rotating in one direction it may either operate the walking beam, or wind the line on the spool for pulling rods, tubing, etc, and on the reverse movement unwinds the line, provision being made for increasing the speed when reversed so that the line is unwound rapidly.
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings is a side elevation of the improved well operating apparatus, showing the walking beam disconnected in dotted lines as when pulling rods, etc. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the mechanism, shown partly in section, the full line position indicating the adjustment for operating the walking beam and winding the line on the spool, and the dotted line position for unwinding the line. Fig. 3 is a detail view illustrating in side elevation the brake mechanism for the drive shaft. Fig. 4 is a detail view on a reduced scale of the base plate upon which the improved mechanism is mounted.
Referring to the drawings, 2 designates the base timbers, 3 the samson post, 4 the walking beam, and 5 the pitman at the rear end of the latter for detachably connecting with crank 6 on shaft 7. Fixed to timbers 2 is base plate 8 of irregular form, the main portion thereof being substantially rectangular in outline, while at one end is the extended portion 8. Shaft 7 is mounted in the stand earings 9 secured to base 8, and journaled in similar bearings 10, also secured to the base, is drive shaft 11 which parallels shaft 7 and is connected thereto by gears 12. Drive shaft 11 extends outwardly over base extension 8, and mounted loosely thereon is clutch pulley 13, to which a belt extends from the engine, not shown.
14 indicates the clutch mechanism, and 15 the clutch operating sleeve or collar movable on shaft 11 for engaging and disengaging the clutch, said sleeve being operated by yoke 16 secured to the upper end of the vertical rock shaft 17, the latter journaled in stand 18 secured to frame extension 8. Secured to the lower end of shaft 17 is lever 19, extending inward substantially parallel with shaft 11 and connecting at its inner end with bar or link 20 extending to a point adjacent the well where it is connected with an operating lever 21 of usual form within convenient reach of the operator who stands close to the well.
Paralleling the extended portion of shaft 11 is the short counter shaft 22 mounted at its inner end in fixed bearing 23 and at its outer end in the upright pivoted bearing 24. The inner end of this shaft is connected by gearing 25 with shaft 11, and carried by the outer end of the counter shaft is friction wheel 26 located within the rim of pulley 13 and adapted to engage and disengage the same according as shaft 22 is movedinward or outward. A link 27 connects said shaft with lever 19, so that movement of said lever in one direction engages the clutch mechanism and simultaneously disengages wheel 26 from the pulley, while a reverse movement engages said wheel and pulley and disengages the clutch.
28 is a brake wheel secured to shaft 11, and 29 is the brake band, operated by bar 30 which extends toward the well parallel with bar 20 and is provided with a corresponding operating lever 31.
Carried y the shaft 7 is spool 32 upon which is adapted to wind and unwind a line or cable 33 which operates over a crown pulley (not shown) supported by mast 34 when bailing, pulling rods and tubing, etc.
hen pumping, pitman 5 is connected to crank 6, with lever 19 in the full line position shown in Fig. 2, and pulley 13 clutched to drive shaft 11, whereby the mechanism is driven at the required speed for operating the walking beam. The same movement is utilized for winding the line on the spool when pulling rods, etc., at such time the pitman being disconnected, as in dotted lines. As the line is not carried by the spool when pumping, the reverse movement at increased speed provides for a rapid unwinding of the line. Heretofore, it has been necessary to unwind the line by hand, which laborious operation is here avoided. The movement of the line-operating'mechanism may be controlled at all times by the band-brake, thus maintaining any speed that may be desired and prevent racing.
With the improved mechanism mounted 011 a single integral base, it is given a firm and fixed foundation and at the same time the several parts are maintained in absolutely accurate relative position.
I claim 1. Well operating apparatus comprising a shaft provided with a crank, a spool mounted on and rotatable with the shaft, and means operating at different speeds for rotating the shaft in reverse directions.

Well operating apparatus comprising a shaft provided with a crank, a spool rotatable with the crank shaft, a driving shaft geared to the crank shaft, a driving pulley for the drive shaft, clutch mechanism for securing the pulley to said shaft, and means for rotating the drive shaft in direction reyerse to that in which it is driven by the pul- 3. Well operating apparatus comprising a shaft provided with a crank, a spool rotatable with the crank shaft, a drive shaft geared to the crank shaft, a driving pulley for the drive shaft, clutch mechanism for securing the pulley to said shaft, a counter shaft geared to the drive shaft, and a wheel on the counter shaft adapted to be engaged with and disengaged from the driving pulley.

Well operating apparatus comprising a shaft provided with a crank, a spool rotatable with the crank shaft, a drive shaft geared to the crank shaft, a driving pulley for the drive shaft, clutch mechanism for connecting the pulley and said shaft, a counter shaft geared to the drive shaft, a friction wheel on the counter shaft adapted to be engaged with the driving pulley, and means connected to the clutch mechanism and also to the counter shaft for moving said parts simultaneously.
6. Variable speed mechanism for well opn erating apparatus comprising a drive shaft,
a pulley loose on the shaft, clutch mechanism for securing the pulley to the shaft, a laterally movable counter shaft geared to the drive shaft, a friction wheel on the counter shaft adapted to be engaged with the pulley, and means for operating the clutch and for moving the counter shaft.

Well operating apparatus comprising a shaft provided with a crank, a spool rotatable with the crank shaft, a drive shaft geared to the crank shaft, a pulley loose on the drive shaft, a clutch for securing the pulley to -said shaft, speed-increasing mechanism geared to the drive shaft, and an operating lever connected to both the speed-increasing mechanism and the clutch mechanism.
8. Variable speed mechanism for well operating apparatus comprising a drive shaft,
a pulley loose on the shaft, clutch mechanism for securing the pulley to the shaft, an upright rock shaft, a clutch operating yoke secured to the upper end of the rock shaft, an operating lever secured to the lower end of the rock shaft and lying in a plane substantially parallel with the drive shaft, a laterally movable counter shaft carrying a Wheel adapted to be engaged with and disengaged from the pulley, and a connection between the counter shaft and said lever, whereby both the clutch and the counter shaft are moved simultaneously.

Well operating apparatus comprising a walking beam, a shaft provided with a crank adapted to detachably connect with the Walking beam, a spool rotatable with the crank shaft, a drive shaft geared to the crank shaft, fast and slow speed mechanism adapted to be engaged with the drive shaft alternately for rotating the same in reverse direc tions, an operating bar extending to a point adjacent the well, means connecting said bar with said speed mechanisms for rendering the latter operative alternately, a brake for the drive shaft, a brake operating rod extending to a point adjacent the well, and a mast over which the line wound on the spool is adapted to operate.
10. Well operating apparatus comprising a shaft provided with a crank, a walking beam, a pitman connecting the crank and beam, a cable-Winding spool rotatable with and at the same speed as the shaft, and means for driving the shaft in reverse directions and at different speeds.
