Description

ahmed l tate my WN Ktm o" QW" t Patent @time Ze WQ- "mf/ LORENZO J. STANNAED AND MARTIN L. PERRY, OF NEWARK, NEW
YORK.
Letters Patent No. 88,093, cla-tell March 23, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN APPARATUS POR. TURNING LOG-S.
The Schedule referred to in these Lgtters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it ana/y concern.:
Be it known that we, LORENZO J. STAXNAED and MARTIN L. PERRY, of Newark, in the county of Tioga, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Machine for Turning, or Handling Logs iu Saw- Mills; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of our invention consists iu placing in the upper part of saw-mills, to be out of the way, and immediately abovethe logs to be sawed, a shaft, with a drum, or cylinder thereon, and so operating the smit, that a chain or rope wound upon the cylinder, shall e made to descend," and when att-ached to the log or timber to be turned upon the head-blocks, that the chain is drawn up, the log turned and lowered on a fiat side, as slowly or carefully as the attendant may desire.
To enable others to make and use our invent-ion, we will describe its construction and operation. i
Suticiently high to be out of the way, and above the log-carriage, is a sha-ft, on which is a drum, or cylinder, A; also a largefriction-wheel, B.
On the cylinder is a chain or rope, with a hook at the end, the chain being of sufficient length to extend to the log below'it'.
Motion is given to the cylinder by the small frictionwheel vD on the shaft C, thsvheel D being pressed upon the wheel B by the lever L.
The shaft G basa pulley, E, from which a belt runs to any shaft in the mill from which power may be conveniently obtained.
The shaft C is also provided with a small pulley, F, from which a belt runs to pulley H on shaft G.
I I@sis shaft has a friction-wheel, J, which also comes in contact with the large friction-wheel on the cylinder-shaft, andis held against it or moved back by the. vlever K.
' The operation of the machine is as follows:
Motion being communicated to pulley E, the shaft v CQ is left constantly moving while the mill is run-v ning. A:The level-L being released, and lever K moved up, the friction-wheel J turns the cylinder A, and un-- winds the chain, and thehook descends to the log, and` is fastened thereto, whenlever K is pushed back, and the friction-.wheel D brought in contact, when the chain is drawn slowly up, and the hook being attached to the log, turns it over.
When square timber vis turned, which would fall heavily on a fiat side, the hook prevents it from falling,
and it is lowered carefully by means of th'e brake O,
acting on the periphery of the wheel B.
What we `claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
'lhe arrangement of the shafts A, G, and G, withl theirfriction-wheels and pulleys, in combination with
