SNAP FASTENING BUCKLE. APPLICATION FILED mm: 20,1907.

SNAP-FASTENING events.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 1907- Seriall No. 379.879.
Patented Fence, 1908.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE .A. HOLMES, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Newton, in the county of'Middlesex and State of- Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Snap Fastening- Buckles, of which the following is a specification. My invention relates to snap fasteners and consists in improvements in the construction of snap fastening buckles such as are employed to secure the ends of belts, garters or In the drawings hereto annexedwhich illustrate embodiments of my invention, Figure 1 is a plan view of a snap fastening buckle, Fig. 2 is a cross section of the buckle shown in Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is an elevatio'nof a stud adapted to engage with the. plate of. my improved buckle. i
The type of snap fastening buckles to which I show my improvements as applied is that in which a plate is centrally perforated either to receive and hold' a ,stud or to receive and hold one member of a snap fastening pair and which is also'provided with lateral slots through which the end of a strap is threaded and by which the stra is held in position. While simple buckle p ates of this general character which em loy plain slots to receive and hold a strap ave been found suitable and adequate,' provided the strap wherewith they engage is of the proper thickness and texture to be securely held by the slotted plate, it has been 'foundthat such simple uckle plates are not satisfactory under all conditionsbecause either by accident or the design of the manufacturer the straps which engage with the buckles vary widely in thickness; consistency and texture. A buckle plate suited to the retention of one strap will be found unsuited to the proper retention of another and consequentl sundry contrivances have been made and a( opted 'for the better retention of a strap by a buckle plate of this general type. For instance, buckle plates have been made with tongues struck-up from the material of the plate so that these tongues may project through suitable holes .formed in the strap. The, objectionhas sometimes been raised and is" doubtless reasonable under some conditions, that tongues projecting throu h the-strap form an excrescence which, u ess carefully of the plate smoothed off, is liable to catch in and possibly to tear overlying garments. By my improvements shown in the drawings hereto annexed, I provide a snap fastening buckle plate with a strap retaining tongue which nevertheless isso arranged that instead of projectin above the buckle or strap it is below an hidden thereby so that by no chance can the -buckle tongue come in contact with or injure Eig. 3 On eitherside of the central perforation (1 I'provide suitable slots 6, b in, the
plate A. As shown in' Fig; 1, I make the slot b T shaped so as to takethe material for the tongue 0 partly out ofthe portion b of the T. shaped slot. The tongue c'has its base at the outer edge of one of the lateral slots and projects inward toward thecentral perforation;-
A strap perforated 1 at suitable intervals is threaded through the slots b b and overlies the snap fastener member e and the central' erforation d. One of the strap erforations 1s then made to engage with t 'e tongue 0 which .holds' the strapfirm'ly in any position The end of to'which it may be adjusted. the tongue 0 lies under the material of the strap so that it is wholly imperceptible when the strapisin osition and secured by means and its 611 agement with a fastener member such as t e stud S.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is: I
In a snap fastening buckle, a plate having longitudinal slots near each edge thereof forming a central cross bar, a lateral recess in said crossbar and a tongue struck up-from.
the body of said late and integral therewith projecting into t c said recess.
Signed by me at Boston, Massachusetts, this 31st day of May 1907.
GEORGE A. HOLMES. Witnesses: 4
