To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, RANsoM D. PATTER- soN, citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Smith, in the county of Sebastian and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rotary Swings and I do declare the following to be a full,

clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to amusement devices, but more particularly to a rotary swing which is so constructed and arranged that the natural swinging motion of the occupants actuates the device causing it to rotate at the pleasure of the occupants as fast or as slowas desired.

My invention has for its object to provide a rotary swing or carousel which combines inone device two or more rotary swings and two or more rocking seats or forms, which rocking seats or forms are actuated by the rotary motion of the swing or carousel.

A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described which is particularly simple in its construction, strong, durable and efficient.

With these objects in view my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the rotary swing or carousel, and particularly in the construction and arrangement of the crank and supporting post.

My invention also consists in the arrangement of the rotary swing which provides for a natural swinging motion of the occupants and my invention further consists in the arrangement which provides for rocking a chair or form by the rotary movement of the swing or carousel.

Referring to the accompanying drawing: Figure l is an elevation illustrating my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same, the guy lines being shown broken away. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the crank showing operatingrods broken away, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of'the crank.

Like numerals of reference indicate the same parts throughout the several figures in which 1 indicates the rotary swing or carousel which comprises a base or bed piece 2; secured to said base or bed piece preferably by bolts is a crank 3, which crank comprises a crank pin 4, upper crank arm 5 and lower plate 6, which lower plate is preferably V shaped as shown, and perforated to receive bolts for securing the device to the base or bed piece 2; the V shaped construction of the portion 6 enlarging the base of support to render the device more stable.

The upper arm 5 is provided with a socket 7, within which socket the supporting post 8 rests, said supporting post 8 having a rounded orball end 9 entering the socket 7 in order to diminish as far as possible the friction between the two parts. Any other suitable anti-friction device can of course be em ployed in this connection.

Secured to the supporting post 8 at the point 9 on each side of said post are two brace pieces 10, said brace pieces 10 being connected at their lower ends to the horizontal swing supporting pieces 11. Carried between the two swing supporting pieces 11 at each end thereof are the swings 12 which comprise the backs 13 pivoted to the swing supporting pieces at 14 and also pivoted to the base 15 of the swing at the point 16. Directly in front of each of the swings 12 are two uprights 17 pivoted to the swing sup porting pieces 11 at the point 18 and pivoted to the base of the swing 15 at the point 19. Connecting said uprights 17 at their upper ends is a rod or handle 20. This device acts as an operating lever or device for the rotary swing, as will be presently described.

Connecting the base of the swings 15 to the crank pin 4 are two connecting rods 21, said connecting rods being secured in any suitable manner around the crank pin 4 and arranged as shown in Fig. 1.

Resting upon the swing supporting pieces 11 and secured thereon is a cross rod or bar 22, a pin or rod 23 passing through or connected to said rod or bar 22 is pivoted to one of the crank connecting rods 21 as shown in Fig. 1. Carried at each end of said cross bars or rods 22 is a seat or form, such as a horse 24, said seat or form being rigidly secured to said rod or bar 22, which rod or bar 22 can be termed a rocking rod.

Arranged at the upper end of the supporting post 8 is a bearing 25 comprising a plate 26 to which a suitable number of guy rods or ropes 27 are secured in order to support the device in an upright position as illustrated in Fig. 1.

Having thus fully described the several parts of my invention its operation is as follows: An occupant or occupants 1n the swing or swings 12 grasp the rod or handle 20 alternately pushing and pulling the same. This force is communicated to the crank pin 4 by means of the connecting rods 21 causing a rotary movement to the swings, and this rotary movement causes each of the swings to rock with a natural swinging motion. As the connecting rods 21 have a reciprocating movement imparted thereto this reciprocating movement is communicated to the rocking rod or bar 22 causing the same to rock and imparting this rocking motion to the seats or forms carried on the rocking rod or bar 22.

Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is,

1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a stationary crank, of a supporting post supported by and rotating on said crank, rotary swings supported by said supporting post, a connecting rod connecting each of said swings to the said stationary crank, a rocking rod, means for connecting the same to one of said connecting rods, and a seat or form at each end of said rocking rod, substantially as described.

2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a stationary crank, of a supporting post carried and rotating on said crank, rotary swings connected to said crank, and means for supporting the said supporting post in an upright position, substantially as described.

3. In a device of the character described, the combination of rotary swings, a supporting post therefor, means for connecting said swings to the said supporting post, a stationary crank under said supporting post to support the same, and means for connecting said swings to-the said stationary crank, substantially as described.
