JENS CR. HOLM, OF CAPE SCOTT, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 28, 1908.
Application filed April 24 1907- Serial No. 370.109-
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Jane CR. HoLM, a subject of the King of England, residing at Cape Scott, in the Province of British Columbia, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The object of this invention is the provision of a wrench which is of simple and strongconstruction, is easy to adjust, and efficient in operation.
The invention consists in the novel construction, adaptation and combination of parts as will be hereinafter described and illustrated in the drawings, of which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench embodying my invention; Fig. 2, an underside plan view of the same shown partly in section; Fig. 3, a fragmentary upper side plan view; and Fig. 4, a cross sectional view taken through 4*4 of Fig. 3.
In the drawings, the numeral 5 represents a cylindrical frame, or head, having a transverse partition 6 disposed intermediate of its depth and provided with four straight slots 7 and disposed so as to be inclined from planes extending radially of the heads axis and severally at right angles with the adjacent ones, but parallel to that upon the opposite side of the axis. In the underside of the head and directly below the respective aforesaid slots are recesses 8 severally having a side wall, as 8, parallel with the communicating slots. Positioned within each said recess is a jaw 9 provided with a marginal dovetail 9 which is slidably fitted within a correspondingly formed groove 8 of the above referred to side walls. Rotatably seated upon said partition is a disk, 10 provided with four slots 10 extending spirally from near the center toward the circumference of the disk and arranged to cross the respective slots 7 of the partition. Fixedly secured to each of the jaws and passing through the superpositioned slots is a stud 11 or bolt 11 of which the latter carry washers 12 which are surmounted by butterfly nuts 13 engaging with threads provided upon the bolts and serving to clamp the jaws in adjusted positions. The adjustments of the jaws are simultaneously accomplished by imparting an appropriate amount of rotary movement to said disk, whereupon the spiral slots thereof traverse the straight slots of the partition and move the bolts passing therethrough to advance or recede toward or from the middle of the head. To conveniently-rotate said disk, it is provided with upwardly protruding lugs 14 adapted to be gripped by the operators fingers. Peripheral ratchet teeth 15 are provided externally of the head as is also a groove 16 above such teeth for the reception of an annular extension 17 of the wrench handle 18. This annular portion of the handle is desirably made in two parts which are connected on one side by a hinge 17 and upon the other by a scarf joint 17 secured through the medium of a screw 19, or its equivalent.
The handle is provided with a shoulder with faces 18 inclined from the axis of the handle and approximately rectangular of each other and positioned to be opposite said ratchet teeth. Upon each side of the handle is a pawl 20 which are pivotally connected thereto, as by pins 21 passing through the pawls and apertured ears 22 upon the handle.
The pawls are formed with a bend in each and have upon their inner arms and contiguous with the angle of their bends, faces 20 adapted to bear against the respective faces 18 of the handle when the awls are 0 eratively engaged with the rate et teeth. The other or tail arms 20 of these members are prolonged to be engaged by springs 23 seated in s'ockets provided in the handle.
Rotatably mounted upon the handle is a sleeve 25 which is cored out at its end adjacent of the head to furnish acavity 26 for the housing of either, or both, of the tailarms 22 as may be required. To allow of the performance of this function the portion of the sleeve about the cavity is provided with spaced notches, as 26, adapted to allow of the tails being pressed thereinto by said springs for causing the faces 20 of the pawls bearing against the angularly disposed faces 18 of the handle. The said sleeve is interiorly sloped to a sharp edge upon each side of the notches as at 27, whereby the pawl tails are embraced and pressed inwardly through the turning of the sleeve, and by adjusting the latter to have either of its notches register with one or the other of the tails, the
same is unrestrained and is pressed outjaws when in their most distended position.
" When employed for square nuts or bolts, the
gripping faces of all of the jaws may be made in p ane surfaces, as at 29, in Fig. 2, while for hexagon or octagon shaped work two of the jaws may advantageously be formed with reentrant gripping faces, as at 29, and in practice, I prefer to embody both of the above described types of jaws in a single wrench, so that its usefulness may be extended.
The operation of the invention, will, it is thought, be understood from the foregoing description. Its advantages reside in the ease of adjustment of its jaws to accommodate itself to various sizes of nuts or bolt heads, through the simultaneous movement of all of the jaws; the engagement of the work upon at least four sides and accordingly is less liable to mar the same even when sub jected to a considerable strain; and, furthermore, through the peculiar disposition of. the faces of the recesses with respect to the gripping faces of the aws whereby the outward thrust is resisted by the head and is not dependent upon the clamping screws, thus enabling the wrenchto withstand the most severe duty.
