Be it known that I, CHARLES V. HUGO, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at St. Louis, in the oounty of St. Louis City and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cord-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relatos to cord fasteners, and one of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a cord fastener of simple construction which can be conveniently used as a paper clip or a book mark.

Another object of my invention is to provide a simple and efficient cord fastener for securing the ends of a cord or tape passed around a package of papers, letters or documents, and which will be easy and uick in operation and will hold the ends of t e cord firmly in fastened position.

These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cord or tape fastener made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a package of papers or documents secured together by a tape, the ends of which are con nected to a fastener made in accordance with my invention, Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of my tape or cord fastener in use as a book mark. Fig. 4 is a rear elevation of an envelop having a cord passed around the same and secured to a cord fastener made in accordance with my invention; Fig. 5 is a detail view illustrating the rear portion of the envelop fiap opened out with my fastener secured thereto. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of a roll of papers secured together by a cord and a fastener made in accordance with my invention.

Referring to the drawings for a more particular description of my invention, the numoral 1 designates a loop formed in one end of the fastener which is formed of a single piece of resilient wire of the proper gage and resiliency, the terminal ends of which form said loop 1, andthe parallel members 2 are extended from said loo backward to form the two coils 3, said coi s comprising two or more convolutions which are connected by a cross strand 4, said strand 4 passing between the arallel members 2, as shown more particu arly in Fig. 1. In using my fastener, as

shown in Fig. 2, a length of tape 5 is secured in the loop 1 by an ordinary knot and the tape is passed around a package of papers or documents 6,. and connected between the coils 3 of the fastener, and extended thence around the package and the free end 7 is secured between the coils 3 at the opposite side of the fastener. When the device is to be used as a book mark, one of the members 2 is disposed upon one side of the leaf and the other one upon the other side thereof, as shown in Fig. 3,- and the coils 3 of the fastener engage the outer edge of said leaf. For securing a number of papers together, the fastener or clip is utilized in a similar manner, the papers being secured between the two members of the coils 3 in an obvious manner. For securing an envelop, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the fastener'may be connected to the fiap of the envelop by means of a staple or bent wire 8 passing through the flap of the envelop and connected to the loop 1, a cord or string 9 being secured to the loop 1 and passing under the staple or bent wire 8 is thus secured to the fiap of the envelop, the string 9 then being passed around the envelop and connected to the coil 3 at the right of Fig. 4, and extended thence around the envelop longitudinally and the free end of the cord connected to the coil 3 at the left of Fig. 4:. As shown in Fig. 6 the cord 9 is connected to the loop 1 of the fastener and passed around the wrapper 10 and the free end of the-cord secured to one or both of the coils 3.

From the foregoing it will be obvious that a paper fastener made in accordance with my invention may be utilized for the various purposes referred to, and provides a simple and efficient means for securing the free ends of tapes or cords passing around packages of papers or an envelop, and as a convenient means for marking a place in a book, and as a paper clip.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:

l. An envelop fastener made from a single length of spring wire and comprising parallel members bent at their ends to form aloop, oppositely disposed coils connected by a cross bar passing between said members, and said members adapted to be secured upon opposite sides of an envelop flap by a wire staple passing through said loop and flap,

and a cord connected to said loop and sta*fle to be connected to said coils, substantiaily as described.

2. A fastener of the character described composed of a single length of spring wire provided with parallel members, oppositely disposed coils connected by a cross bar eX- tending between said members, and each end of the wire being bent into a loop, and a cord or tape connected to said loop and 10 adapted to be connected to said coils, substantiafly as described.
