of the United States, residing, respectively,
at Newport, in the county of Campbell and State of Kentucky, and at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have jointly invented certain new and useful Improvenients in Board-Edging Machines, of which the following is a specification.
It is the object of our invention to provide a new and improved board edging machine, capable of providing a board with a true straight edge irrespective of previous irregularities, curves,..or other unevennessor imperfections in the edge of the board when.

In our,
improved device we provide a flat-top norma table, whereon ordinary sawing operations may be performed, and whereon the board may be handled, and we embed the said endless bed or supplemental supporting table in this normal table, and we further provide means'whereby the relative height between the top surface of the normal table and the top surface of the endless supplemental sup orting table may be relat vely adjusted to Q eight, so as to cause the endless bed or supplemental supporting table to protrude from the upper surface of the normal table for raisin the board relatively to the normal table w e the edging. operation is ,being performed, and for also permitting the upper surface of the endless bed or supplemental supporting table to be on a evel with or slightly below the upper surface of thenonnal table when the machine is being used for ordinary sawing operations, for instance, scroll-sawing purposes.

' A usual practice of edging boards hereto fore, has been to lay the board upon a so ,1 called edging-board, which is then manually! shoved upon guide-ways across the path of travel of the saw, the edging-board being then pushed back to original position for a succeedi g cut, and in operation it was necessary to push the edglng-board forward the full length of the board being edged and to then return the edging-board to original position for a succeeding out.
In our improveddevice, we dispense with edging boards, and perform the edging operation with an endless supplemental sup porting table of the character and in the relation mentioned, the said endless supplemental supporting table traveling cdntinuously in one direction. In our improved construction also, the upper or supporting stretch of the 'endless supplemental. supporting table may be comparatively short, compared with the necessary length of edging boards heretofore used or the length of the board being edged.
We have exemplified our invention as embodied in a band-sawing machine, in which 1 represents the base, which supports a lower saw-wheel shaft 2 carrying a lower band-saw wheel '3 and mounted in suitable bearings 4. A column 5 projects upwardly from the base. A bracket 6 is adjustable on'the column on ways 7 by means of an adjustin screw 8 journaled in bearing 9 on the co umn, and; threaded into an internally threaded lug 10 on the bracket. The bracket 6 supports an upper saw-wheel bearing 11 provided with suitable adjusting and straining devices. An upper saw-wheel shaft 12 is journaled in the bearing, an upper saw-.wheel'13 being secured to said shaft. Thesaw-wheel shafts or mandrels 2 and 12 are parallel'with each other. A band-saw blade 14 takes about the saw-wheels and is driven from the lower sawwheel in. a suitable manner, as by a pulley 15. The bracket 6, at its front end, is provided with a slideway 16 in which a ram 17 is ad justable and has movement. If it is desired to raise the rolls, the outer end of the lever 25 is depressed, which raises the ram, and the adjustablepin 36 is inserted into the proper aperture 37 for limiting the rise of the outer end of the lever, and thereby limiting the drop of the rolls, the rolls however being permitted to rise as the outer end of the leveris not limited in its downward If it is desired to raise the feedrolls to substantial extent, the outer end of the lever 25 is depressed, and the pawl 33 pushed into engagement with the rack 32, thereby supporting the ram. The nut 31 is then loosened, and the outer end of the lever raised for sliding the T-bolt 27 in the slot 28 to a new position lengthwise of said slot, when the T-bolt .is again clamped, the further depressing of the outer end, of the lever 25 then causing further rise of the ram and feed-rolls. A supplemental slide 42 is adjustable up and down on the ram on a slide-way 43 and is secured in place thereon by means of bolts 44. The supplemental slide carries an uppersaw-guide 45.

adapted to travel in this slot. This endless bed forms an endless supplemental supporting table and is composed of links 49 having a supporting face 50. The shaft 57 is journaled in bearings 59 on brackets 59 secured to the normal table. The shaft 58 is journaled in bearings 60 51, the upper stretch 52 of which ring the normal height of the rolls, which latsecured to the bottom of the normal table.
The endless supplemental sup or-ting table is extended in width, and, as be noted in Fig. 6, when the machineis edging boards, the endless supplemental supporting table extends higher than the upper face 53 of the normal table so that the board, shown at a, may be supported upon said endless supple mental supporting table, thus raising the board above the upper surface of the normaltable for relieving contact therewith, as con tact between the board and normal table or with supporting parts otherthan said endless supplemental supporting table will have the tendency to cause the board to swerve from its true line of travel, which is parallel with the path ef'travjel of saidendless supplemental su o f nrqtable. We'prefer also to pro.-
wide an adjustment for the. endless table so that'it may be lowered to bring its upper surface on a level with the upper surface of the normal table, or if desired so as to bring the upper surface of the endless table slightly below the level of they upper surface of the normal table, for putting the endless table out of commission as a guiding agency, in which case. the endless table remains station 9.1- so that the normal table or the combined ta les may be used for ordinary purposes of a stationary table, in other usual sawing operations. In this manner the machine is adapted not only for edging purposes but also for other sawing purposes. For readily permitting this adjustment I prefer to have the slot &7 take the form of a groove, the said groove being provided with an inclined. bottom 61, the incline extending lengthwise of the groove. A wedge 62, having an inclined under-facet? for mating the incline of the bottom of said groove, is inserted in said groove. 'The wedgeis also provided with slide-ribs 64 adapted to engage the slidegrooves 65 of the links of the endlesstable,
the saidslide-ribs and slide-grooves being preferably V-shaped for definitely positionmg the endless table laterally-irrespective of wear'between the parts.
For raising or lowering the upper stretch of the endless supplemental table, the wedge is adjusted long1tudinally of the groove and for accomplishing this, we provide a screwrod 66 threaded into the wed e at 67 and extending through an elongate aperture 68 in the lower wall of the groove or channel 47 of the normal table and having a handwheel 70, by means of which the wedge may be forced longitudinally and clamped to the normal table in desired position.
The endless supplemental table, which has an extended ap roximately fiat. upper supporting surface or the board, which ma if desired be suitably roughened or knur ed, operates within the normal table and travels closely adjacent to the hand-saw blade substantially parallel to the longitudinal axes of the band-saw wheels, the rolls thereabove having broad faces for forcing the board upon the endless supporting table .over a large area of the latter for supporting the board and thereby compelling the board, irrespective of length, to travel coincident with the travel of the endless supporting table and thereby cutting the edge of the board in a true line parallel with the lon itudinsi axes of the band-saw wheel mandre s.

We prefer also to provide a ower drive for the endless sup lemental tab e, although the said endless ta le maybe permitted to run idle and still erform its guiding functions, or the trave ing table may be driven and the ressure-rolls above run idle. For driving tie endless supplemental table we provide the drive-shaft'78 with a sprocketin 87 of a bracket 88 secured to the normal ta le and carries a pinion 89 which meshes with a ear 90 on a shaft 91 journaled in a bearing 92 of the bracket 88, and in a hearing 93 of a bracket 94 secured to the normal table. The shaft 86 is provided with a sprocket-wheel95, a sprocket-chain 96 taking over said sprocket-wheel and the/s )rocketwheel 85. A clutch 97 is provided etwccn a clutch-shifter 9S, sliding in bearings 99 of the bracket'94 being adapted to engage or disengage the clutch. Having thus fully described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure 1. A board edging machine 'comprisin the combination of a saw-blade, a norma board-en table over the surface of which the work may be adjusted transversely of the plane of said saw-blade, said table having a slot parallel to the plane of said saw-blade, an endless supplemental table in said slot, and means for permitting relative up and down adjustment between said supplemental table and said normal table adjacentto the cutting 1 range of said saw-blade.
A board edging machine comprising the combination of anormal table having a slot substantially parallel to the sides of; the saw-blade in' said machine, an end-' less supplemental supporting table insaid slot having a board -supportingsurface higher than the upper surface of semi normal table for supporting the board longitudinally of said board supporting surface and in raised relation to said normal table, a gage for the work ad'ustable across the surface of said normal table laterally of thesides of said saw-blade, and means for permitting relative positioning up and downadjacent the cutting range of saidsaw-blade between said board-supportin surface and the upper surface of said norma table, and constructed and arranged for permitting employmentfof said machine for edgin and for regular'sawing purposes, substantially as described.

A board edging machine comprising the combination of a normal table having a slct substantially parallel to the sides of the saw-blade in said machine, an endless supplemental supporting table in said slot having a board-supporting surface higher than the upper surface of said normal table for supporting the board longitudinally .of said p orting surface and in 'I'HISEEl rela-i tion to said normal table, a gage for -the work adjustable across the surface .of said normal table laterally of the sides of said saw-blade,

A board edging machine comprising the combination with a normal table having a slot substantially parallel to the sides of the saw-blade in said machine, of an endless supplemental supporting table in said slot having a board-supporting surface higher than the upper surface of said normal table for supporting the board longitudinally of said board-supporting surface and in raised relation to said normal table, a gage for the work adjustable across the surface of said normal table laterally of the sides of said saw blade, means for permittin relative positioning up and down adjacent t e cutting range of said saw-blade betweenlsaid boardsupporting surface and the upper surface of. said normal table, and pressure means above said endless supplemental table constitutin feeding means for said board, substantially as described. c a

A vertical band-saw edging machine comprising the combination with upper and lower band-saw wheels and ma'ndrels therefor, of a normal table having an upper stock surface and a slot therein, an endless su plemental board-sup orting table in said slot with an upper fee mg surface extending substantially arallel W1th theaxial planes of said saw-W eel mandrels, said normal table having a slit therein adjacent to and extending substantially parallel with said endless sup lemental table, driving means for. saidend ess supplemental table, and a separable clutch in said driving means located adjacent to saidslit, constructed and arranged for permitting the band-saw blade to be inserted past said clutch and into said slit for the purpose, substantially as described.

A board edging machine comprising the combination of a normal table having a slot, an endless supplemental. table in said slot having a board supporting surface higher than the upper surface of said normal ta is for supporting the board longitudinally of said board supporting surface and in raised relation to said normal table, means forpermitting relative ositioning up and down between said boar -su portin surface and the upper surface of sai norma table, a roll above said endless supplemental table, drivingmeans for actuating said endless'sup- Elemental table and roll hile feeding a card therebetween, and means for raising said roll, and constructed and arranged for permitting employment of said machine for edging and for regular sawing purposes, substantially as described.
