RAILWAY JOURNAL-BOX APPLIANCE.
' Appliances, of which the following is aspeciiication.
My invention relates to improvements in means for raising the journal boxes of railway cars for the purpose of removing' and replacing the brasses.
The object ofmy invention is to provide an appliance of a strong, simple and durable constructiim, composed of few parts; cap-able of vbeing quickl applied to the car wheel and axle, andy means of which 'the Ajcarnalboxmay be easily and quickly raised sufficiently .to of the. removal and replacement 'of the brasses, andby'which at the same time the car wheel .will be held down and the necessity avoided. ofgoing to the. ground for a lifting bed or foundation.
My invention consists in the novel cons'trnetion of parts vand devices and' in the novel combination. of parts and devices herein shown and more particularly set forthin the claims by which this object or resinlt is accomplished.

ism embodying my invention comprises, essentially, a supporting bar 6 adapted to engage' and receive support from the end of the axle, a supporting hook 7 adapted to engage any suitable part of thecar, preferably the car Wheel, a connection 8, preferably a chain between the supporting hook and supporting bar, a lifting lever 9 adapted to engage the journal box and preferably fur nished with an adjustable piece 35 to engage the journal b'ox (see Fig. 6) or with an antifri-ction wheel or'roller 1() (see Fig. 1 a
fulcrurn 11 for the lifting lever, the fulcrurn lifted.
To ada t the supporting bar 6 to engage the end of) the car axle, I preferably provide it with a poipted end 16 which may enter the customary centering'cavity 17 in the end of the axle.V The@ inner end of the supporting bar 6 is also preferably furnished withan integral cross arm 18 to engage the end face .of the axle, and thus prevent the supporting A bar from swinging to one side.
The supporting' hook 7 is preferably fur-A nished wit integral arms 19, 19, to which the fulcrup chains or connections 12, 12 'are preferably connected by rivets 36 (see Fig. 5), or by olevises 20, 20, (see Figs. 1 and 2).
y These integral arms on the supporting hook thus cause the supporting ook to also serve as an equalizing lever for the fulcrurn bar, at the lower end of the fulcrum chains 12,12.
The adjustable links or bars 13, 13, atithe "lowerend of the fulcrurn chains 12, 12, pass between the forks 37 of the ends of the ful crum bar 11 (see Fig'. 8), or through slotsl 21 in the fulcrum bar 11, and are furnished .with a series of holes 22 to receive the 'pins' 23 by which the fulcrum bar is adjustablyr con-V nected to the fulcrum chains. The pins 23 preferably have attaching chains 2.4: to fasten 'them' to the' fulcrum bar so that they' may not become lost.

'lille :nijusting piece .'5 also han integral shoulders 4; to permit of :i eiill lower ailjnetment.
The lifting sei-ew 1li is preferably eonneotod tothe liftinglv lever hy an adjustable link 27, having preferably a series of lixeil pins or integral luge 4:55 teen Figa (l) or in lien thereof :i serine` of holes 2S unil a movable pin 29, the pin 35) having; an attachingl chain Si). The lifting screw 'lil has a head 3l. it its lower enti which turns in a swivel or elevis 32.
et the upper enil of the nljustingi' linl 27, the
seine preferably lnrvinf;i antiirietion halle fie i interposed. The lifting' Lecrew is furnished with a handwheel or handlel h v which it is turned in the screw threaded swivel nut l5 carried on the outer enil ol'l the supporting bar 6.
34 is the lid or eover of the journal box.
I n operation tin` lirl or cover of the journal box is opened anni the supporting bar 6 inserted into the open journal box n-nci the over the fla-nge ol' then by turningI the lifting` Sore-W the lifting` lever unused to raise the journal box and thuel'ree tlw-.braesee between the upper eiilee of tli.o"joii`i'1iel and the `upper part of the journal lioxl'roin the weight of the cer, so that the seine may he slipped. out anni repiaeeil when ileeireil.
