Description

I'I. POL, OF EAST ABINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS. A Y *y Letters Patent No. 87,590, dated .Ma/rch 9, 1869.
IMPROVE!) LAST. l
The Schedule referred to in these LettersI-atent and-making part of the same.
To whom it 'ma/y concern Be it knownv that I, MICAH H. POOL, of East Abington, in the countyV of Plymouth, and State Of Mas- 4 sachusetts, have invented vcertain 'Improvements in Lasts.; and do hereby declare the following to bea full', clear, aud/.exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 represents alast in perspective, embodyin my invention.
igure 2 represents a last in perspective, showing a.
The object of my invention is to produce an extension-last, to be used more especially in finishing the Shanks of boots and shoes, when it is desirable to have the last the lengtholflthe boot or shoe, but, not particularly essential tohave the boot orI shoe ttedat the instep. y
The nature of' my invention consists in having the Vtoe of the last attached to the body of the last by rods, and. extended by springs, so that the last willt in length any size, or to have the last in sections, held by tongue and groove.
In the drawings, in iig. 1,-
A is the body of the last.
B, the toe.
Rods a, a', and a", are set fast into the toe-section, B, and extend into the foot or vbody of the last A.
VUpon one Or more, if greater lstrength is wished, of ytheserods, is placed a spiral spring, b, bearing against toe B and body A.
Now the toe can be pressed close up to the body of y l the last, if the last is to be used in a small-sized boot or shoe O`r,if iu a larger size, the spring Or springs readily adjust the length of last to size of'boot or shoe.
In iig. 2 is shown another method of accomplishing the'same result.
The last is cut Ainto two parts, A and B'. l
These parts are connected by dovetailed grooves, or tongue c, and groove d. Now, whenit is desired to extend the length of the last, wedges are inserted into the .space S, th ns extending the' toe ofthe last to'thelength of boot or shoe to 'belasted.
- It will be understood that these lasts are for use only when it is desired to-havle the sole lasted'without referenceto the lasting of the uppers; and for iinishing shanks, for which it is especially adapted, it is a most convenient and time-saving invention'.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An extension-last, composed of parts A and B, rods a, a, and a, and spring b, substantially as and for` the purposes set forth.
2. An extension-last, composed of parts A and. B', tongue o, and groove d, as shown in iig. 2., asV equivalents of construction shown iu fig. 1.
In testimony whereof', I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
