Description

PATENTED DEC. 24
M. E. MODONNELL.
ORNAMENT. APPLICATION FILED DEO.14, 190s.
THE NORRIS ps'rsxs 00., wAsHmcTaN. n. c
MICHAELEUGENE McDONNELL, OF LEOMINSTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
ORNAMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 24, 1907.
Application filed December 14:, 1906. Serial No. 347886.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MIonAEL EUGENE Mo- DONNELL, a citizen of the United States, re-
siding at Leominster, in the county of Norcester and State of Massachusetts, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Ornaments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to combs, especially to combs for personal wear, and more especially to the method of manufacturing the same.
The object of the invention is to produce in a comb a light or different colored portion without detracting from the strength or sub stanti'al character of the comb. To accomplish the same object, it has heretofore been proposed to cement together two parts of the comb, one of lighter shade than the other. This makes a weak point in the structure and has not a finished appearance even if the work is well done. My invention obviates these objections.
Broadly speaking, it consists of the following elements: A body of transparent or translucent material having teeth properly cut and shaped, a channel running through the thickness of the body and a piece or pieces of material of any desired shade or substance inserted in the channel and cemented therein so that this part of the comb or ornament is made of a lighter or different color than its thickness and position would otherwise produce.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a front elevation .of the comb showing my invention applied thereto, and Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of Fig. 1 with the teeth broken away.
The drawings show a body 1 having diverging side lines 2 and a curved top line 3. Integral with and projecting from the lower part of the body are the teeth 4 of usual construction while between the body and the teeth is a raised ornament 5 cemented to the body. The body we will say is divided into approximately the same color as that of which. the teeth and the ornamental portion 5 are made and the latter half 7 is lightened in shade in the following manner. A vertical longitudinal channel 8 is made in the upper edge of the half 7 extending through all or a part of the length of the back and a iece or pieces 9 of any desired shape of lig t or different colored paper, or celluloid, or other material, is interposed between the front and back plates 10 and 11 and cemented therebetween so as to form a rigid part of the comb.
When a body has been stamped out of the proper material and to the required shape, the saw cut is made, the lightened material cemented in the saw cut and the comb may then be heated to a proper degree for bending. The raised ornament 5 may then be cemented to the body and any desired curvature of the comb obtained.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An article of personal wear comprising a non-opaque body of relatively dark color having a slit in its upper edge, and an insert of material of different shade than the body adapted to change the shade of that portion of the article in which it is placed.
2. An article for personal wear comprising an integral non-opaque body having greater length and breadth than thickness, a longitudinal channel formed between the front and back of said body and throughout a part thereof, and an insert cemented within said channel of a different shade than the body.
3. A personal wear comb comprising a non-opaque body, teeth carried by said body,
