OF WEBSTER, NEW YORK DENTAL CROWN-DRIVER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 24, 1907.
Application filed August 24, 1907. Serial No. 389.947.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE RoBT. AvERILL, of the town of Webster, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Crown-Drivers and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of the specification, and to the reference-numerals marked thereon.
The present invention relates to a device for driving dental crowns and it has for an object to provide a construction which will effectively drive the crown without destroying its shape.
To these and other ends the invention consists in certain improvements and combinations of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully pointed out in the claims at the end of the speciiication.
In the drawings: Figure l is an enlarged top view of one embodiment of my device, before the plasticsubstance is inserted therein. Fig. 2 is a like view showing the plastic substance with an impression of a crown. Fig. 3 is a side view of the same device. Fig. 4 is a section on line a-a of Fig. 2.
In driving gold crowns it is customary to deliver blows only on the top thereof without supporting the side walls and as a consequence the crown in many instances is crushed. In this invention this objection is obviated by providing a driver having a driving face cor#k responding to the shape of the crown to be driven so that equal pressure is applied to all exposed faces.
In the present embodiment I employ a suitable support 1 in the form of a stem having at one end a container or cup-shaped member 2 which has opposite portions of its walls cut away to provide depressions 3 to receive those teeth on opposite sides of the crown to be driven. This cup shaped member 2 is adapted to receive a plastic substance 4, such as sealing wax, which has a depression 5 conforming to the shape of the crownto be driven. In operation the cup is filled with the plas tic substance which is softened and given an impression of a crown and is then dipped in water to cool it quickly. The depression thus formed should preferably ext end entirely through the plastic substance to the bottom of the cup so ,that the latter will form a solid surface to bear against the crown in driving. Upon the driver being fitted to the crown and receiving blows the crown will be driven by the bottom wall of the cup and the side walls will be yieldingly supported by the plastic substance thus maintaining the shape.
It is apparent that I have provided a device which is simple in operation and inexpensive to manufacture. Further it will not only expedite the driving of gold crowns, but will improve the appearance of driven crowns.
I claim as my invention:
1. A dental crown driver comprising a suitable support and a container carried thereby and having opposite portions of its wall provided with cut-away portions.
2. A dental crown driver comprising a suitable support, a container carried thereby and having opposite portions of its walls provided with cutaway portions, and a plastic substance arranged in the container.
