Be it known that I, HENRY M. HALLETT, of Ludington, in the county of Mason and State of Michigan, have invented certain new 5 and useful Improvements in Smoking-Pipes and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the inthe art to which it appertains to make and 10 use the same.

The object of this invention is to provide an attachment for tobacco pi es for effecting the drying or evaporation o nicotin, saliva, and other moistures which usually accumulate in pipe bowls; and also to allow the smoke to pass freely from the pipe bowl without coming i nto contact with saliva and other f moistures so disagreeable to smokers. The invention will be hereinafter fully set forth and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a pipe embody- I ing my improvement. Fig. 2 is a view of lthe attachment removed. Fig. 3 is a face view of the tobacco rest. Fig. 4 is a view of the lower portion of the attachment. Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view on line 5 5, Fig. 1. Referring to the drawings, the attachment -comprises a plate 1 constituting the rest or support for the tobacco load, and a cup 2 secured to and depending from the underside of such plate, both being located in the bottom of the bowl, a circumferential space, however, being left between the cu and the r surrounding wall of the bowl. T ese two parts are united by a nutted screw 3, the L ead of which rests on the to of plate 1, 'while the nut 4 bears against t e bottom of .the cup. This screw is surrounded by an asbestos sleeve 5. In plate 1 I form a series of openings 6 by striking up the metal from the underside thereof, such openings ermitting the smoke to pass freely, while t e projecting walls prevent ashes, nicotin, and other objectionable substances from reachthe bottom of the bowl.
