To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, FRANK A. FALK, residing lat Staoyville, in the county of Mitchell and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lever Mechanisms, of which the following is 4a specification, reference being vhad to .the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in lever mechanisms and particularly to lever mechanisms in which the position of the lever is controlled by the engagement of pawls between the teeth of a rack; and an object of my invention is to provide a lever mechanism of the class just described in which the position of the lever may be adjusted with" great nicety. A

In the base of the support o; is fulcrumed the lever b to which riveted or otherwise suitably secured a casin c, in which are slidably mounted the paw s d, the lower ends e of which rub together, while the lupper ends f are separated and are formed with the holes g. The parts being in the position shown Fig. 1', and it being desired' tamove the leverl a distance equivalent to onehalf the intervalA between two adjacent teeth o of the rack n, the .link-rod y' is pulled upwardly against the tension of the coil-spring lr thereby rotat1ng the toothed segment 71. to the left in the iigures. The teeth p f the left-hand side of the segment play the holes g of the left-hand pawl; and since this pawl rests upon the top of one of the teeth o, it remains stationary. The toothed -segment h acts as a lever, the ulcrum of which is the 'u per end of the lefthand awl; and the teet on the right-hand half o the toothed segment, by their enga e-` ment in the holes in the upper end of t e right-hand p'awl, raisethat pawl from between the teeth o ofthe rack n. The lever b may nowbe shifted in either direction.
-When the lower end of one of the pawls passes 'from the top of the tooth o', the coil- -spring 7c will immediately force that pawl into the notch between the teeth o, it being understood that the operator releases the link-rod y' so that it may be pulled down.
The casing and its contained. pawls, toothedsegment and spring may be made separately and in dilierent sizes and attached to the ordinary lever now in use upon farm machinery throughout i Athe country', from which it will appear that my new mechanism has a wide'iield of usefulness.
I claim 1. In a lever mechanism ofthe class described, the combination'with a lever and a rack for holding said lever in position, 'of a .pair of cooperating slidable pawls carried by said` lever, the lower ends of said pawls being adapted to rub against .each other and to engage alternatelysaid rack and the `upper' ends. of said pawls being separated; a device interposed between said upper ends and in engagement therewith; yielding meansv one end of which is secured to said device and the other end of which is secured to said lever; and means for `moving said device to raise one of said pawlsagainst the tension of said' yielding means;
