GUARD FOR NON-REFILLABLE BOTTLES.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, I'IANS'J. MonTENsEN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Baltimore, Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guards for Non-Refillable Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
The invention referred to in this application which is a division of a prior application filed April 25th, 1904, Serial No. 204,812, relates to improvements in non-refillable bottles and particularly to the construction of a lock or guard arranged within the neck of the bottle to prevent tampering with a valve controlling the passage of fluid from the bottle.

In the drawings 1 designates the body and 2 the neck of a bottle which may be of any suitable size and form, the passage between said body and neck being closed by a suitable valve 3. In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawing, this valve is normally held to its seat by a plurality of spherical weights or balls 4..
Within the neck of the bottle is arranged a lock or guard constructed to provide a plurality of tortuous passages through which liquid can freely pass, but which will effectually prevent the insertion of anything designed to open or interfere with the action of the valve. This lock is made in the form of aplug consisting of a central core or stem 5, provided with a plurality of longitudinally extending radially projecting webs 6. From both sides of each of said webs 6 there project a series of bafI-leplates 7 of the form shown. Any suitable number of such baffle plates may be provided and they are so positioned and arranged that those on one of said webs overlap or project partially over the corresponding plates on the other webs. In the embodiment of the invention illustrated there are five of such plates on each web, two projecting from one face and three from the opposite face thereof. The number of said plates may, however, be varied when desired, according to the length, etc. of the guard plug. The stem or core 5, Webs 6, and baflie plates 7, may all be formed integral, for instance, of glass molded to the desired form. Any suitable material may however be employed.
The lock or guard is held firmly in place in the bottleneck by means of a resilient fastener. As shown in the drawing an annular groove 8 is formed in the inner surface of the neck 2 and in the outer longitudinal edges'of the webs 6 are formed notches or grooves which aline with said groove 8 when the guard is in place. An expansion strip or ring 9 of any suitable material, preferably of metal with squared or rounded outer edges is fitted about the guard and when in position occupies the groove which, as above described, is formed partly in the bottle neck and partly in the guard. A secure fastening for the guard is thus provided.
The advantages of the guard hereinbefore described will be readily apparent. It will be seen that by it any tampering with the valve is effectively prevented as it is absolutely impossible to introduce any instrument through any of the tortuous passages in order to hold the valve open and the latter will be held closed except when the bottle is inverted to permit of the escape of its contents.
An important feature of the device is that it does not re uire the holding of the bottle in any particu ar position in order to permit liquid to flow out and also does not materially obstruct the flow. That is, as the guard provides a plurality of passages the liquid can freely flow from the bottle. If but a single passage is provided the flow of liquid from the bottle is obstructed as the air contained in the bottle as well as the liquid must pass throu h the same passage. The guard is reversible and does not have to be inserted in the bottle neck in any particular manner. The fastening ring 9, it will be noticed, is entirely covered and protected so that it is impossible to dislodge the same by use of a wire or other means inserted through the bottle neck. Said fastener is inclosed in the groove in the bottle neck and the notches in the Webs 6 of theguard except where it passes across the spaces between said webs and at these points it passes between the bafiie plates 7. It is firmly pressed against the neck of the bottle at a number of points, namely, by each of the webs 6 of the guard, and, as above stated, cannot be dislodged by Patented Dec. 17, 1907.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed and desired to be secured by Let ters-Patent is,
1. The combination with a bottle provided with a valve acting to prevent the passage of liquid into the bottle, of a guard secured within the neck of the bottle and comprising a central core, a plurality of radial webs projecting from said core, and a series of baffle plates arranged in the spaces between the webs and connected with the latter and the core, each of said plates extending but partially across the space in which it is arranged, and the several plates in each of said spaces being out of alinement with each other, whereby a plurality of tortuous passages are provided within the bottle neck, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination with a bottle provided with a valve acting to prevent the passage of liquid into the bottle, of a guard secured within the neck of the bottle and comprising a central core, a plurality of radial Webs projecting from said core to the inner surface of the bottle neck, and a series of baffle plates formed integral with said core and webs and arranged in the spaces between the webs, each of said plates extending but partially across the space in which it is arranged, and the several plates in each of said spaces being out of alinement with each other, whereby a plurality of tortuous passages are provided Within the bottle neck, substantially as and for the purpose described.
8. The combination with a bottle provided with a valve acting to prevent the passage of liquid into the bottle, of a guard secured within the neck of the bottle and comprising a central core, a plurality of radial webs proj ecting from said core to the inner surface of the bottle neck, a series of battle plates arranged in the spaces between the webs and connected with the latter and the core, each.
of said plates extending but partially across the space in which it is arranged, and the several plates in each of said spaces being out of alinement with each other, whereby a plurality of tortuous passages are provided within the bottle neck, and a fastening ring fitted in and projecting from a groove in the bottle neck surrounding said guard and eX- tending through notches in the webs of said guard, substantially as and for the purpose described.
