The present application is a division of our application Senal No. 92,839, filed Feb. 6, 1902, and while the invention is shown applied to a Densmore t pewn'ting machine, it should be understood that it may be employed in other characters of typewriting machines.

The rock shaft 29 likewise has a finger piece or arm 35 secured to one end thereof, preferably at the left hand end, so that a depression of this finger piece or arm will rock the shaft 28, thus disengaging the feed rack 26 from its pinion 25 to permit the carriage to be freely moved in either direction.
In the ordinary Densmore machine the paper carriage as an entirety comprises three distinct members, viz., a frame carrying the platen, a carriage in which the platen frame is mounted or supported and a truck or frame that carries the feed rack. The truck comprisesa frame 36, in which the rock shaft 28 that extends substantially from end to end of the frame, is pivoted. The rear portion of the truck 36 is grooved longitudinally at 37 to form a track for cooperation with horizontally disposed bearing rollers 38 carried by the 'rear guide rail 3 The guide rail 39 is secured to the top plate 2 of the machine by angular brackets 40 and one end of each of the brackets is secured to the topplate 2 by headed screws 41, which pass through slots and enter tapped holes in the top-plate.

The bar 54, in addition to forming a connecting bar between the end plates of the platen carriage, may be grooved as indicated at 62 to form a track-way for anti-friction rollers 63 that are carried by a shift bar 4 and this shift bar is provided with depending arms 65 which are pivoted to the framing of the machine. There are two of these depending arms, and a rock shaft 66 extends from side to side of the machine and serves as pivots for the arms. The depending arm 65 at one side of the machine, preferably at the left hand side, is extended to form a dc pending projection or arm 67 which is slotted or ape'rtured at 68. Pivoted to the lower end of this arm and on the inner side thereof at 69 is a vibratory link 70 which has a transverse slot 71 formed on an arc struck from the pivot 69 and a slot 72 in the link radiates from the pivot 69. The upper end of this link is pivotally connected at 73 to a twopart adjustable connecting rod 74, the lower end of said rod being pivoted to a shift key lever 75 at 76. This shift key lever 75 is provided with the usual key 77, and is rigidly connected to an arm 78 extending from a rock shaft 79, which is mounted in suitable hearings in the framing of the machine and extends from side to side thereof. The right hand end of the rock shaft 79 is connected in a similar manner to a shift kcy lever 80 having a key head 31.

It will be seen that the tension of the spring 87 is exerted to maintain the shift bar and platen carriage to the rear, when'the par-tsare in the positions represented in Fig. 1.. It will likewise be observed that when the parts are in the positions represented in pivot or shaft 66 and the upper end of the link 7'0 is moved to the opposite or rear side of the pivot or shaft 66 by reason of the pin and slot connection JO-72, between the lever83 and the link 7 0.- The respective points of connection of the upper ends of the spring and the rod 74, are always on opposite sides of'the pivot or shaft 66 of the shifter bar, and when the point of connection of the spring is in the rear of said pivot or shaft 66,

Thes ift keys 77 and 81 we term temporary shift keys because they are operable to move the platen from the )osition to which it has been shifted or moved by the permanent shift key mechanism, but the platen will be restored to its initial position, determined by the permanent shift key, as soon as pressure is released 85 from the so-called temporary shift keys 77 or 81. This.'shifting mechanism is of especial advantage in that it V provides means for shifting the platen frame to the lower or upper case printing position and likewise provides a temporary shift key at each side of the key board, which keys are at all times operable to move the platen from the position to which it has been moved by the permanent shift key and permit the platen to be restored to such position as soon as pressure upon either of the temporary shift keys is released. l

What we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 4 i 1. In a typewriting machine, the combinati on of a paper carriage,- a transversely mov' able platen, key operated means for moving the platen transversely to any one of a plurality of positions and for retaining it in the position to which it has been moved, temorar shift keys one at each side of the keyhoarc a rigid connection between said temporary shift keys, operative connections between one of said tem orary shift keys and the key operated mcc ianism whereby both shift keys are operable to move the platen transversely from the position to which it has been moved by the first mentioned key 0 erated mechanism and for permittingsaid p aten to be restored to its initial position when pressure is removed from either 'of the temporary shift keys, both of the said temporary shift keys being at all times operable irrespective of the position of the key oper- 2.
