To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ELIE FORMAN, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Boston, county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Caps, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.

This invention relates to caps and has for its object to provide a cap having the novel l features which will be more fully hereinafter described and then pointed out in the claims.

The cap comprises a foundation, a band surrounding the foundation and secured thereto at its upper edge forpthe entire distance around the cap, and at its lower edge through a portion of the distance around the cap, a top or body which is secured to the upper edge of the band and the foundation, and a lining for the top, the edge of which overlies and is secured to .the upper edge of the foundation.

3 designates the foundation which may be of any suitable material, such as card-board or leather-board in the form of a band of proper height to form the side of the cap 4 the band which surrounds the same; 5 the top; 6 the lining of the top; 7 the sweatband, and 8 the vizor.

In making the hat according to my invention, I take a body-band 3 of suitable material and first apply thereto the band 4 which is preferably of the same height as the bodyband and which constitutes a portion of the outside of the cap. This band 4 is for a portion of its length folded around under the lower edge of the foundation 3, as shown at 9 Fig. 3, and is sewed thereto by suitable stitching 10. The sewing 10 extends entirely around the cap except the portion occupied by the vizor 8. At this portion, the band 4 is disconnected from the foundation 3 at the lower edge thereof. The upper edge of the band 4 may or may not be sewed directly to the foundation as desired. The next step in the process is the securing of the body or top 5 to the foundation and band 4. This is accomplished by first turning the foundation with the band applied thereto wrong side out, and then turning the body 5 wrong side out and laying the outer side thereof against the inner side of the turned foundation, as shown in Fig. .4, that is, against the band 4 which will be the outer side when the cap is turned right side out again, and then securing said body 5 to the band 4 and the foundation by means of suitable stitching 11.

In the manufacture of the body 5,V it is provided with a suitable lining 6, and the lining is made longer than the body 5, so that a liap or portion l2 of the lining extends down below the lower edge of the body. For securing the body to the foundation, the flap 12 is turned back, as shown in dotted lines Fig. 4, so that the stitching 11 passes through the body 5 and foundation and band 4 only. Thereafter the flap 12 is turned around over the upper edge of the foundation, as shown infulllines Fig. 4, and is sewed thereto by suitable stitching 13. The cap is then turned right side out and the top and foundation and band 4 have the arrangement and appearance shown in Fig. 2. The sweat-band 7 is then secured in place by suitable stitching 16, and as the last step in the manufacture of the hat, the vizor 8 is secured in place. In attaching the vizor, the upper edge thereof is inserted beneath that ortion of the lower edge of the band 4 w 'ch is disconnected from the foundation 3, 'as shown in Fig. 2,

and after the sweat-band has been turned` down out ofthe cap, the vizor is sewed to the foundation by suitable stitching 15.. Previously to this the portion of the foundation against which the vizor abuts has had a facing strip 14 applied thereto, as seen in Fig. 6, this-facing strip forming a finish for the lower edge of the foundation at the point where the vizor is situated.

A cap embodying my invention has the upper edge of the foundation secured directly to the body and the flap 12 of the lining constitutes a finish for the upper edge of the foundation, thus avoiding the necessity of sewing in place any special facing strip for a finish.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. Ina cap, an annular foundation meinber, a nishing band surrounding the foundation and secured thereto, and a top having its lower edge secured directly to the upper edge of the foundation, said top overhanging the foundation member and having a lining, the lower edge of which is folded over and secured directly to the top edge of the founl dation and thus constitutes a finish therefor.

2. In a cap, a foundation, a band surrounding the foundation and secured thereto, a top of a size to overhang the foundation and having its lower edge secured directly to the upper edge of the foundation, said top having a lining, the lower edge of which is folded over and secured to the top edge of the foundation and constitutes a finish therefor, and a sweat-band. secured to the lower edge of the foundation and overlying the folded-over edgeof the lining.

3. In a cap, a foundation, a band surrounding the saine and secured to the lower edge thereof for a portion of its length, a top separate from the band and having its lower edge turned upwardly and lying against the upper edge of the band and secured to the band and foundation by stitches, said top having a lining provided with a flap which is folded over the upper edge of the band and foundation and secured thereto by stitches, and a sweatband secured to the lower edge of the foundation and overlying the folded-over portion of the lining.

4. Ina cap, an annular foundation member of stiff material, a finishing band surrounding the foundation member and secured thereto, and a top overhanging the foundation member and having .its lower edge turned upwardly and secured to the outer side of the top edge of the foundation member, said top having a lining, the lower edge of which is folded over the top edge of the foundation and is secured both to the inner and outer sides thereof.
