CURTAIN-POLE AND SUPPORT THEREFOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 3, 1907.
Application filed July 181 1907- Sorial No. 384398.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DIOKRAN M. SARKL,
SIAN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Maiden, county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement i Curtain-Poles and Supports Therefor, ofwhich the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like letters on the draw ing representing like parts.
This invention has for its object the production of a novel, simple and effective device for han ing curtains, portieres, and the like, the device being so constructed and arranged that the 'parts thereof may be easily assembled or taken apart.
Broadly speaking the device comprises two brackets adapted to be rigidly secured in position upon the frame of the door or window, a longitudinally extensible pole, and separable connections between the ends of the pole and the brackets.
I have so constructed the device that one member of each separable connection is permanently attached to the end of the pole, and the other member of each connection is carried by and forms an integral part of one of the brackets, the connections being of the ball and socket, snap-fastener type.
When the two members of each connection are in operative engagement the pole is firmly suspended between the brackets and the pole is maintained extended to the exact length desired.
As will a pear hereinafter the device is so arranged tiat the pole may be quickly removed from the brackets if desired, and it ma be ut u as uickl and without the aid of slfilled l abon The various novel features of my invention will be fully described in the subjoined specification and particularly pointed out in t e following claims' Figure 1 is a perspective view of a curtainpole and supports therefor embodying my invention, the pole being broken out to save space; Fig. 2 is a top plan view, partly in section, of the inner end of one of the brackets, showing the socket member of the separable connection, Fig. 3 is a side elevation of one of the attaching members, secured to the end of the pole, said member cooperating with the socket member on the bracket; Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the attaching member, showing the slotted head and neck thereof; Fig. 5 is a detail view partly in section showing a solid bracket, with a socket member thereon.
Referring to Fig. 1 I have shown the longitudinally-extensible pole as composed of two parts, a, a the former being herein shown as tubular to telescopically receive the latter, and in practice both parts may be made of brass or other metallic rods of suitable length and diameter. By sliding the two parts in or out the desired extreme length of the pole as a whole is secured.
The pole is supported at its ends by suitable brackets, and heroin I have shown each bracket as having a tubular body I), bent in the direction of its length so that its two ends are substantially at right angles to each other, one end having integral therewith oppositely extended fiat portions or feetv I). These feet are apertured to receive screws 2, Fig. 1 by which the bracket is rigidly secured to the frame W of the door or window, the two brackets being so set up that their outer ends are in alinement and inturned, as shown in Fig. 1.
Adjacent the outer end each bracket is provided with an annular, internal recess b conveniently formed by spinning a bead b upon the tubular end, leaving a short tubular extension b beyond the bead, in the present embodiment of my invention.
The socket member of a separable coupling or connection is thus formed on each bracket, to cooperate with a complemental attaching member which is fixedly secured to the end of the pole.
Each attaching member is herein shown as comprising a circular head 0, a reduced neck 0 and a sleeve-like base the head and neck being slotted longitudinally at c Figs. 3 and 4, 'to enable the same to be compressed, said member being made of spring metal.
The normal diameter of the head is greater than that of the extension I), but such that when compressed and pushed through the extension the head will expand into the socket b and be thereby gripped and held securely.
To facilitate the insertion of the head into the extension I) the head is slightly rounded at its periphery, as shown.
When the head is gripped by the socket the neck 0 preferably fits snugly in the extension, preventing any wabbling of the two parts, the end of the extension 6 then abutting against the base c as shown in Fig. 1. This sleeve-like base 0 receives and is fixedly secured to the end of the pole, by brazing, pinning or in other suitable manner, so that the attaching member becomes a permanent fixture therewith.
After the brackets have been attached to the sides of the door or window frame, in the position shown in Fig. 1, the pole is shortened somewhat, and one of the attaching members is snapped into the socket member on one of the brackets. Then the other end of the pole is brought opposite the other bracket, and the pole is extended as the attaching member is snapped into the socket member of such bracket, whereupon the pole is securely positioned and maintained extended at exactly the correct length.
One person can readily put up or takedown a pole, as will be obvious, and there is no tedious and unsatisfactory fitting and nice adjustment to get the structure up in proper shape.
The sna form of the separable connection makes a fiim coupling when in place, but will give or uncouple readily when the attaching member is drawn out in line with the axis of the socket member on the bracket.
If desired the brackets may be made of solid rods bent to shape, as at (Z, Fig. 5, and having secured to one end feet (1, while at the other end a socket member (1 shown as a sleeve having an internal annular socket (Z is brazed or otherwise secured to the bracket.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination, with a longitudinallyextensible curtain pole, of an attaching member fixedly secured to each end of the pole, each member having a compressible head, and a sustaining bracket for each end of the pole, each bracket having its outer tubular end provided with a continuous annular, internal socket to receive and grip the entire periphery of the head of the adjacent attaching member when inserted therein.
2. The combination with a two-part, telescopically connected curtain pole, of an attaching member rigidly secured to the outer end of each part and having a reduced neck and a compressible head, and a sustaining bracket for each end of the pole, each bracket having an internal, annular socket to receive and grip the head of the adjacent attaching member and a tubular extension into which the reduced neck snugly fits.
3. A curtain pole having an attaching member fixedly secured to each of its ends, each member consisting of a sleeve-like base to receive the end of the pole, a tubular neck and an enlarged head, the head and neck being longitudinally slotted, combined with a bent supporting bracket having a short tubular extension and an internal annular recess therein adjacent one end to receive and grip the head of the attaching member and at its other end having apertured feet where by the bracket may be secured in place, the neck of the attaching member fitting snugly in the tubular extension.
4. A curtain-pole bracket comprising a'tubular metallic body bent in the direction of its length and having integral feet at one end and an internal annular socket adjacent its other end, combined with a coupling member having a slotted, compressible head and a sleeve-like base adapted to receive and be fixedly secured to the end of a curtain-pole, the socket in the bracket receiving and gripping the compressible head, to separably connect the bracket and curtain-pole.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DIOKRAN M. SARKISIAN.
