@Wi h1 cones UNITED STATES PATENT oEEIoE.
RICHARD EALTER, oF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CLASP.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, RICHARD FALTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clasps, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to clasps comprising two members, each designed to be attached to a part and to interengage` each other for securing the parts, carrying said members, together.
The object oi the present invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive clasp of the character indicated wherein the two members are alike.
With theioregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the novel form of clasp hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that I do not desire to limitmyseli to the precise orm of devices illustrated and described7 as I realize that within the scope of the appended claims changes in the size, shape, arrangement anddetails oi construction may be made by a skilled mechanic without departing from the spirit of my invention, or sacrificing any of its advantages.
In 'the accompanying drawing forming part oi this specification, Figure l is a plan-view oi a clasp constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan of one member oi the clasp, it being understood that the other member is of exactly the same construction. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through the two clasps shown in Fig. l.
Like reference numerals indicate corresponding parts in thediferent iigures oi the drawing.
The reference numeral l indicates the body portion of one of the members of the clasp, this body portion being formed preferably of sheet metal, and having any suitable means for attaching it to a garment or the like, such for example 'as the perlorations 2. The body lportieri l is provided, preferably near its center, with -plane from the body portion. At its outer end, the
tongue4 is provided with suitable interlocking means, such as the knob or projection 5 preferably stamped from the metal in a well known manner. Also formed integral with the edge of the body portion l on opposite sides ofthe tongue 4 is a pair of diverging arms 6, which in conjunction with the tongue 4, form a W-con struction. Each of the arms 6 is provided with suitable thread or other fastening means such as the perforations 7 and is bent slightly as shown at 8 so that each of the arms lies ina different plane from the body por- Specieation of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 26,1906. Serial No. 327.972.
Patented Nov. 12, 1907.
tion l, although the arms 6 preferably are parallel with the body portion l, as shown in Fig. 3.' It will be noted that the tongue 4 is bent away from one side of the body portion and that the arms G are bent from the opposite side, so that the arms 6 and tongue 4 are on different sides of the body portion.
It will be understood that both members oi the clasp are exactly alike in the construction shown, although I desire it to be understood that while I lay great stress on the fact that the two members are exactly alike, still I do not wish to be limited in this respect except where clearly claimed.
It will be understood that in fastening the clasp, the two members are slid together so that the interlocking member 5 on the tongue G of each clasp member engages the interlocking perforation 3 in the body portion oi the other clasp, the tongue Al and arms 6 ol each member of course being on opposite sides of the body portion of the other member.
I t will be apparent that the perforations 3 and projections 5 of the two members produce two sets of interlocking devices ior holding the members of the clasp together, the resiliency oi the tongues 4 of course causing the projections 5 to snap into and out oi the perforations 3 when the two members are moved together or drawn apart.
What I claim is:
1. A clasp member having a body portion provided with a part adapted to interlock, a tongue projecting from the body provided with a part to interlock. and a pair ot arms projecting from the body on opposite sides of the tongue.
2. A clasp a depression interlocking member having a body portion provided with centrally thereof forming an element of an means, a tongue extending.,y from the body with its ond out ot' the plane of thc surface of thc body, a projection on tho tongue extending toward said plane, and a pair of arms on oppositt` sides oi' the tongue.
Il. A clasp member having a body portion provided with one element ot' an interlocking moans, a tongue projecting from the body, n projection on said tongue, andvarms extending from the body on opposite sides of the tongue. said tongue and arms being olt'set from the body in opposite directions.
l. A clasp member comprising a body portion having attaching moans, a depression thlrcon, a tongue formed integral. with one odge of the body portion, said tongue being bont at an angle to the plane of the body portion and having a projection thereon, an arm on each side of the tongue, said arms having fastening means and having their outer ends in a dillerent plane from the plane of the body portion.
5. A sheet metal clasp member comprising a body portion provided with one element of an interlocking means, and parts extending from one edge of the body part and forming substantially the limbs of the letter W.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. l
RICHARD FALTER.
