To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ALFRED K. YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Steam-Boiler Furnace, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to steam boiler furnaces and its object is to so construct the bridge wall and to dispose injectors in such a manner as to direct the iiames and hot products of combustion over an increased area of the boiler and thereby correspondingly increase the efficiency of said boiler.
A still further object is to dispose injectors in such a manner as to practically insure the consumption of all combustible products thereby preventing the emission of smoke to any objectionable degree.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter' more fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings is shown the preferred form of the invention.
In said drawings: Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section through a boiler furnace constructed in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a section on line .r-r, F ig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section showing the relative positions of the injectors and the iues in the bridge wall.
Referring to the frgiues by characters of reference, l is a boiler which may be supported in any suitable manner there being a bridge wall 2 located beneath the boiler at the rear of the fire box. This wall extends to a desired height. At points above the grate 3 and at the ends of said bridge wall are lues 4 which extend into the front portion of the bridge wall for a desired distance at right angles and are then inclined upwardly toward the rear face of the bridge wall as shown at 5. An air conduit 6 is located within the bridge wall be low the iiues 4 and extends throughout the width of the bridge wall. This conduit has an air inlet passage 7 extending from the ash pit 8 of the furnace and a series of outlet ports 9 extends from the conduit into the fire box 10. A pipe 11 extends through the conduit and has a series of outlets 12 whereby steam directed into the pipe 11 will be discharged through the outlets 12 and longitudinally within ports 9 thereby creating a suction and causing air to flow into the conduit 6 from passage 7 where it is mixed with steam and injected into the re box.
It is well known to persons versed in this art that the products of combustion as soon as they pass over the bridge wall iiow downward away from the boiler and therefore considerable heat is wasted. Moreover, those portions of the boiler located adjacent the side walls of l the furnace are not heated to the same degree as the lower portion of the boiler' because they are removed a greater distance from the bridge wall. The principal object of the invention is to provide means whereby these side portions of the boiler may be heated to the same temperature as the lower portion of the boiler and therefore said boiler rendered more eflicient in generat ing steam. T o accomplish this result flues 4-5 have been provided the same being used in connection with injectors 13 which are located diagonally within the front corners of the fire box at the sides of the front wall 14 thereof. These injectors may be of any desired construction and each preferably consists of an outer casing 15 having air inlets 16 which may be controlled by a rotary damper 17. A steam inlet pipe 18 extends into the casing 15 and by permitting steam to escape through this pipe and through the discharge end of the casing 15 air is sucked through the inlets 16 and mixed with the steam and is carried thereby with great velocity into the lire box 10. These injectors 13 are arranged diagonally so that the injector at the left of the fire box will direct a jet of steam and air diagonally across said nre box and directly into the ue 4 5 at the right hand side of the bridge wall. The other injector will direct a jet diagonally across the fire box into the left hand flue 4 5.
As a result of the construction herein set forth it will b e noticed that the following results occur: Products of combustion generated within the fire box are comthereinto from the ports 9 and combustion is therefore considerably increased and most of the unconsumed combustible particles are ignited. While this operation is going on the intersecting ets of air and steam directed from the injectors 13 force a large percentage of the products of combustion while in an incandescent state through the flues 4-5, the rear inclined portions 5 of said iiues directing the products of combustion upward against the side portions of the boiler thereby insuring an even distribution of heat throughout the transverse area of the boiler and correspondingly increasing the efficiency of said boiler. The remainder of the products of combustion pass over the bridge Wall in the usual manner. I
The preferred form of the invention has been set forth in the foregoing description but I do not limit myself thereto as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacriiicing the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of the claims.
What is claimed is:
