GEORGE H. WHEARY, OF RAGINE, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR TO THE HARTMANN TRUNK COM- PANY, OF RAOINE, WISCONSIN.
TRUNK ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 5, 1907.
Application filed May 141 1906- Serial No. 316.617
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. WHEARY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Racine, in the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trunk Attachments; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple, economical and cheap support for garment hangers to be used in connection with clothes closets or the like, it being especially applicable to trunks of the wardrobe type, said invention consisting in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts as hereinafter frilly set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.
in the drawings: Figure 1 represents a cross-section of a portion of a trunk on line 11 of Fig. 2, having secured thereto a runway embodying the features of my invention, with a series of garment hangers thereon together with a follower-frame, some of the hangers and follower being shown drawn out upon the runway from -the body of the trunk in the position they assume when the garments are to be removed therefrom; Fig. 2, a front view of the same, and Fig. 3, a perspective view of the runway detached from the trunk.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A indicates a trunk and B the hinged top, which is shown in the drawings as open, the trunk being set on end to serve as a wardrobe. A runway C is located in the trunk adjacent to one end-wall thereof, said ri'inway consisting of a round rod having a straight portion D extending centrally from the trunk bottom to a point slightly beyond the depth of said trunk, where it is formed into a gradual partly offset loop E and turned at approximately a right-angle to form another straight portion F, which terminates in a rightangle loot G, that extends into and is secured to the inner face of the front of the trunk-body. The .rear end of the straight portion D has a depending foot H, which is secured to the bottom of the trunk. In order to support the strain upon the runway intermediate of its ends, a U-shaped bracket 1 is riveted or otherwise made fast to the straight portion D, having a foot extension J, which is made fast to the adjacent end-wall of the trunk. The shape of the bracket 1 permits the hooks K of the garment hangers K to freely pass said bracket while being pushed in or out of the trunk The described runway may be attached to any simple form of trunk, and thereby convert the same to the wardrobe type, the garment hangers being suspended thereon can be readily slid back and forth for access to the garments Without interference, and when the trunk is packed, said hangers with their garments are all moved back into the trunk upon the straight portion of the runway with the follower-frame K on top to secure the articles so packed in position, the top being then closed and looked as usual with the straight por tion F of the runway projecting into said top.
While I have shown and described therunway as being constructed of a round rod bent in the proper form, it is understood that the rod may be other than round, and said runway could be fastened to a trunk in various ways other than that shown, Without departing from the spirit of my invention, the essential feature of which is a runway attachment for trunks of the type described bent to form a right-angle track when horizontally disposed for the suspension of garment-hangers slidable thereon.
I claim:
1. A trunk attachment consisting of a garment hanger runway support having straight portions at an approximately right-angle one to the dther in a horizontal plane when said support is in position to suspend the hanger slidable thereon.
2. A trunk attachment consisting of a garment hanger runway support having straight portions connected by a partly offset loop and at an approximately right-angle one to the other in a horizontal plane when said support is in position to suspend the hanger slidable thereon.
3. A trunk attachment consisting of a garment hanger runway support having straight portions at an approximately right-angle one tothe other in a horizontal plane when said support is in position to suspend the hanger slidahle thereon, and foot extensions at either end of the straight portions.
4. A trunk attachment consisting of a garment hangerrunway support having straight portions at an approximately right-angle one to the other in a horizontal plane when said support is in position to suspend the hanger slidable thereon; foot extensions at either end of the straight portions, and an intermediate supporting bracket in connection with one of the straight portions, clearance being had in the bracket for said hanger.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Racine in the county of Racine and State of WVisconsin in the presence of two witnesses.
