Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 29, 1907.
Application filed March 11. 1907. Serial No- 361.701.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES L. COLEMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Duluth, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pulleys; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to pulleys and has for its object the provision of a pulley and bracket therefor adapted for convenient use for hoisting and holding in suspended position a bunch of bananas or other articles.
It consists of the constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
Inthe drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my said invention in operation. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same In the drawings 1, is a bracket adapted in any suitable way to be secured to a suitable support, as by screws 1 to the overhead joist 2. Said bracket has formed thereon ashoulder or shoulders 1 and the cheeks 1 which cheeks are preferably oi nearly circular contour. Mounted between said cheeks and supported thereby, directly or indirectly, is a pulley wheel, 3, the flanges of which are deeply indented in their peripheries, so as to form radial fingers 3, spaced apart by the indents. These fingers are formed so as to have approximately the same radius from the axis of the wheel as the said shoulders have from the axis of the wheel. A suitable suspending cord 4 is rove over said wheel and preferably provided with a hook 4*.
In operation the end of said cord in front of the wheel is engaged with the article to be suspended, and the opposite or free end of the cord is drawn down in rear of the wheel to raise the article the desired distance. The cord extending in rear of the wheel is then drawn sidewise into one of the indents and held over in such sidewise position while it is permitted to run forward a short distance over the wheel thus turning the wheel which carries the cord against one of the shoulders on the bracket, where it is pinched and held fast between one of said fingers and one of said shoulders. The free end of the cord may then be permitted to hang free,
or may be looped up out of the way in any convenient manner.
To take down or lower the suspended article, the above described operation is reversed as will be obvious.
My invention facilitates the raising or lowering and securing of such articles as bananas in show windows, and avoids the necessity of securing the power end of the cord to a separate anchorage whereby it frequently becomes an interference to the free and convenient use of the space around the suspended article.
I am aware that several minor modifications may be made in said bracket and wheel, within the scope oi my claims, as, for example, the lingers might be formed only on one flange of the wheel, and there might be only one supporting cheek on the bracket; I do not therefore desire to be limited to the exact form of bracket or wheel herein illustrated.
What I claim is.
The combination with a support having a cheek piece and a shoulder formed thereon, said support having an in- (lent formed therein between said shoulder and cheek piece, of a pulley carried by said cheek piece and provided with a peripherally indented flange, the indent in said flange being adapted to register with the indent in said support.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature, in presence of two witnessesv JAMES L. COLEMAN.
Witnesses James T. \Va'rsox, W. H. SAL-\LLWUUD.
