To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that. l, ROBERT L. Lyons, ol' \\'nltl1am, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Method of Sewing on Buttons; and I hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact description of the same, refer ence being had to the accompanying drawings. forming part of this specification.

This invention relates to an improved method oi sewing buttons on to an underlying fabric by stitches passing through button holes previously formed in an overlapping portion of the same fabric, or in a separate fabric.

The object o the invention is to simplify this general method oi sewing on buttons.

The invention consists in the improved method oi sewing on buttons and the several steps in such method as shall hereinafter be more fully described and pointed out in the claims.

Figure 1, represents a. view of portions of a garment and partially illustrating the new method. Fig. il., represents an enlarged section-a1 view of parts oi the same showing the relative positions of the parts of the garment at the beginning of the operation. Fig. 3 is a. similar View illustrating the completion of the first step in the improved method. Fig. 4, represents a similar view showing the button hole as expanded to permit the passage therethrough of the second group of stitches. Fig. 5, represents a similar view of the completely nttached button.

Similar numbers of reference designate corresponding parts throughout.

In carrying this invention into practice, I take two pieces of fabric in one of which button holes have previously been formed, or, as illustrated in the drawings, a garment A having the edge portions Il and Cin the latter of which the button holes .De-D have previously been formed and stitched, said button holes forming, as usually made, narrow slits; l now place these edge portions B and C in the overlapping relation shown in the drawings and place against the portion C o, button E, herein represented ns a. four hole button, the holes e--e of which are placed in line with one of the button holes D as is indicated in Figs. l and 2. By moans of the needle 2, operated by hand or by machine, l now attach, or partially attach the button E to the portion B oi the fabric by stitches g passing through the pair o l holes e-e of the button and through the unexpanded l button hole D, as is indicated in Fig. 3 of the drawing, I then move the button E laterally with relation to the portion C of the garment to effect the expansion of the button hole D by the stitches g drawing against one edge thereof to expand the button hole approximately to the shape shown in Figs. 4 and 5 and at D in Fig. 1; the sewing operation is now completed the group of l stitches i passing through the holes e-e of the button E and through the expanded but-ton hole as' shown in Fig. 5 of the drawing.

The operation of expanding the button hole D after forming the stitches g may be assisted by placing the fabric B aga-inst the surface of a. mechanical element 6, as the work support of a sewing machine and holding the portion C by means of a. mechanical engaging device as shown at 7 in Fig. 4 oi the drawings, while the button E is moved laterally but I do not wish to limit this method by the use of mechanic-9.1 means as the portion C may be manually held while the button E is moved laterally, or the portion B and the button E may be held while the portion G is drawn in a. direction to expand the button hole beyond the holes'e-e of the button. Y

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent.

The method of sewing on buttons to an underlying fabric by: stitches passing through button holes in n superposed fnbrlc, which consists ln rst attaching the button to sold underlying fabric by stitches passing through an unexpanrled button hole in the superposcd fabric, holding said superposed fabric, then moving the button with relation to the button hole by the drawing action of salti stitches, nnd finally finishing the attachment ot the button to the underlying fabric by stitches passing through said button, at a distance from the first mentioned stitches and through the expanded button hole substantially ns described.
