To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK A. LANG, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough ofQueens, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have i11- vented new anduseful `Improvements in Doors, of which the following is a specication.
The invention relates to doors and in many of its features more particularly to rotating doors.
Objects of the invention are to provide a door structure which may be used as a rotating door or as a swinging door affording a straight-away passage, and which may be changed from one to the other easily and expeditiously and with but little or no re-arrangement of the door members; to eifect the foregoing objects while providing a relatively large area for occupancy by persons using the door either as a rotating door or as a swinging door; to provide a door which may be used either as a revolving or swinging door and which also affords'a complete closure for the entire door structure with but little rearrangement ofthe parts and which may be also locked against actuation. These and other objects of invention will in part be obvious and will in part more fully appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in thenovel constructions, parts, arrangements, combinations and improvements herein illustrated and described.
The accompanying drawings, referred to herein and forming a part hereof, illustrate one embodiment of the invention, the same serving in connection with the description herein to explain the principles of the in- Vention.

The invention contemplates a door structure including a casing comprising segmental members or side walls with doorways therebetween and a revolving door mounted for rotation within the casing, and contemplates further a revolving door comprising door members which are movable relatively to the general door structure and each of which may be moved into position to provide a passageway between such members and the casing segments or which may be moved into position so that no passageway is provided between the said members and the casing segments while permitting the door to rotate within the casing. By such an arrangement of parts, a particular embodiment of which is herein illustrated and will hereinafter be described, by simple movements and without any demolition or elaborate changes in, or adjustments of, the
door structure the available space within the casing may be broken up into several compartments for use as a rotating door or substantially the entire space may be utilized for a straight-away passageway while still providing a complete closure for the entire casing by a simple partial revolution of the door. The invention -includes other features which are set forth elsewhere vmany of its features to that shown and described in .United States Patent No. 841,696, dated Jan. 22, 1907.
As illustrated the door comprises two members, 3 and 4, each of which is movable with the entire door in its rotation but each is also mounted so as to be movable separately. In the illustrated embodiment each of the members 3 and 4 is mounted pivotally so as to rotate about an axis of its own, each being movable or rotatable independently of the other. The said door members l and 2 are separated and when the door is used as a revolving door the space between them is closed by a door member 5 which may also be movable and if desired may be swung on hinges at one of its vertical edges. As herein shown the door members 3 and 4 are bent longitudinally, either curved or angularly, and it will be l ing segment as the door member rotates past and that two passageways are formed between parts of the said door members and the door member 5. When the said door members are moved so thattheir concave sides face inwardly upon thev door structure, however, the greater part of the space within the casing is left available as a straight-away doorway when the door members 3 and 4 are positioned nesting within the casing segments. When the door is given a quarter turn and the .door members 3 and 4 are positioned in the doorways and are of suitable shape, either of them may completely' fill its doorway and the edges will be closely adjacent to the casing segments. The form of mounting for the said doors herein shown comprises an arm 6 conveniently attached to each of the said door members near its top, and located upon what may be conveniently styled y iti frame 8 is shaped so as to have extensions which are in substantial alinement with each oi the door members 3 and 4 when they are in position with their concave sides iacing either outwardly or inwardly. For the purpose ot' holding the said door members iirmly in position any suitable devices may be provided such devices being shown herein in the iorm of bolts 11 which may be shot into recesses l2 in the trame 8. The said bolts may be located at any suitable point upon the door and are shown herein as being mounted to engage theirame 8 in either position oi the door members as just indicated.
ln the embodiment oi the door illustrated herewith there is also provided a ioot plate 13 which is shown pivotally mounted in the iloor oi the door casing, the said mounting being shown in the iorm of a ball-bearing 14, The toot plate is shown herein as being attached to the door members 3 and 4 in a suitable manner, as by bolts 15 and 1G. By withdrawing the engaging bolts 15 and 16 the ioot plate 13 may be removed and its bearing covered with a suitable cap plate, not shown. This will be iound advisable ier instance when the door is used in the form shown substantially in Fig. 4 oi the drawings. There is also shown beneath the bearing 14 a suitable dust-pit 22 for receiving any dirt that may work into the bearing and which might otherwise remain therein.
When the irame 8 is rotated into a substantially longitudinal position with reference to the doorways between the segments 1 and 2 it will be` iound that either or both oi the door members 3 and 4 may be rotated about its axis 7, as desired, into a reverse position, as indicated in Figs. 2 and 4 oi the drawings. Prior to rotating the said member the intermediate door member 5 may be swung back and fastened against one of the door members 3 or 4. The door member 3 or 4 may be proportioned and located with respect to the segments l and 2 so that the door member 5 may be carried therebetween during the rotation oi the entire door, or it may be iound convenient at times, ior instance in summer, to remove the door member 5 altogether. When the 'door member 5 is removed and the members 3 and 4 -moved into position so that their concave sides iace inwardly, and positioned as shown in lull-lines in Fig. 4 they will lorm a complete closure for the door structureleaving no recess which may serve as a lodgment ior pesrons or animals or which will expose a portion oi' the interior oi the door structure to the action oithe elements. It will be understood that by giving a quarter turn to the doorway irom the position illustrated in iull lines in Fig. 4 the members 3 and 4 will then be nested within the segments 1 and 2 leaving an ample and unobstructed passageway.
A suitable locking device for one of the said door members 3 or 4 when in position to close the doorway is provided and in the illustrated form thereof the bolt 16 is utilized or this purpose, the bolt sliding downwardly to engage a suitable recess in the iioor. The
said bolt is also shown as engaging the ioot plate 13,. as
hereinbeiore described and as shown in Figs. 1, 5 and 6- oi" the drawings. The said bolt may be provided with an actuating handle 17 and have also a suitable device for holding it to each oi its adjusted positions. The said device is shown herein in the form of a flat corrugated spring 18. A suitable device ier locking the said bolt is provided, the illustrated form thereof comprising a tumbler 19 slidably mounted upon a guide 20 and adapted to slide into the locking position as shown in Fig. G or out of the locking position as shown in Fig. 5. The tumbler 19 is shown as being geared to a pinion 2() which may be rotated by any suitable key as may be iound convenient. The said bolt may also serve, ii` desired, to lock either the swinging door member 5` i rom movement with reference to the member 3 and f1 or to release the said door member 5 while holding th e entire door from rotation. As will be seen by reference to Figs.v 5 and G the bolt 1G, through its handle i7, may bc drawn*upwardly so as to be free oi the foot plate i3 or it may be pushed downwardly so as to engage the toot plate 13 while still engaging'the door member 5. lt may be pushed downwardly into the posit ion shown in Fig. G so as to release the door member 5 aud to engage the recess in the iioor ior holding the door member 3 or 4in which the bolt is carried inunovablc in position. By adding suitably located holes in the iloor ier the said bolt it may be used ior locking the entire door structure from rotation in either of the hereinbeiore described positions of the door members 3 and 4 or when the door member 5 is used the bolt may be utilized to lock the door member 5 vwith reference to the members 3 and f1, or it may be positioned so as to leave the member 5 free to swing.
From all the foregoing the manner of operating the door will be understood andit will be further uudel'- stood that a `door structure has been provided which realizes the objects oi invention and the advantages herein setiorth, togetheivwith other objects and ad van tages.
The invention, in its broader aspects, is not limited to the particular.constructions shown, nor to any par- ,ticular constructions by which it has been er may be What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

A door structure including in combination a casing comprising two opposed segmental members, a door arranged for rotation within said casing, said door comprising two door members bent longitudinally, saiddoor members being separated and symmetrically arranged and each being constructed and arranged to be moved so as to present is concave side and its longitudinal edges toward a contiguous segment of the door casing or to present its convex side thereto, and a door member for closing the Space between the said two door members when. the said door members present their concave sides toward the casing segments.
5. A door structure including in combination a casing comprising two opposed segmental members, a door arranged for rotation within said casing, said door comprising a plurality of door members bent longitudinally, each being constructed and arranged to be independently moved so as to present its concave side and its longitudinal edges toward a contiguous segment of the door casing or to present its convex side thereto.
6. A door structure including in combination a casing comprising two opposed segmental members, a door arranged for rotation within said casing, said door comprising a door member bent longitudinally and constructed and arranged to be moved so as to present its concave side and its longitudinal edges toward a lcontiguous segment of the door casing or to present its convex side thereto, and means for locking said door member against movement.
7. A door structure including in combination a casing comprising two opposed segmental members, a door within said casing mounted to rotate about an axis, said door comprising two members symmetrically arranged with reference to the door axis, each of said door members being symmetrically mounted upon an axis of its own carried by the door structure.
8. A door structure including in combination a casing comprising two opposed segmental members, a door within said casing mounted to rotate about an axis, said door comprising a plurality of door members, one of said door members being constructed and arranged so as to be rotatable independently of the rotation of the door and so as to either permit or prevent a passageway between the said door member and a casing segment as the door rotates past the segment.
9. A door structuie including in combination a casing comprising two opposed segmental members having a doorway therebetween, a longitudinally-bent door member mounted for rotation within the said casing, said member being constructed and arranged that it may be moved to present either its concave side or its convex side to the doorway while its edges are closely contiguous to the edges of the easing, and means for locking it in one of said positions.
10. A door structure including in combination a ckasing comprising two opposed segmental members having a doorway therebetween, a longitudinally-bent door member mounted for rotation within the said casing, said member boing constructed and arranged that it may be moved to present its concave side or its convex side to the doorway while its edges are closely contiguous to the edges of the casing,a bolt for holding said door member from movement, and a lock for said bolt.
11. A door structure including in combination a casing, said casing comprising two opposed segmental members, a door constructed and arranged to rotate within the saidv casing, a swinging door member constituting a part of the said rotatable door, means which may be set to hold the swinging door member iixed with reference to the other member of said rotatable door and to permit the door as a whole to rotate within the casing, or to permit the said swinging door to swing with reference to the other members of the said rotatable door and to hold the door as aV whole from rotation within its casing, and a lock for said means after it is set.

A door structure including in combination a casing comprising two segmental members, a door mounted for rotation within the said casing, said door comprising two separated door members, a swinging door member between the said door members, a foot plate between the said separated door members, and means which may be moved to attach the separated door members to the foot plate or to detach them therefrom.
13. A door structure including in combination a casing comprising two segmental members, a door mounted for rotation within the said casing, said door compi'ising two separated door members mounted for rotation, a swinging door member between said iotatable door members, a foot plate between said rotatable door members, and means which may be moved to attach the rotatable door members to the foot plate or to detach them therefrom.

A doorl structure including in combination a casing comprising two segmental members, a door mounted for rotation within the, said casing, said door comprising two longitudinallybent members mounted for rotation, a swinging door member between the said rotatable members, a foot plate between the said separated door members, means for attaching the said separated door members and the foot plate together, an overhead frame to which the said separated door members are pivoted for rotation, and means engaging the said separated door members and the said frame for holding the said door members to position.

A door structure including in combination a casing comprising two opposed segmental members, a'door mounted for rotation within said casing, said door comprising two symmetrically arranged, separated members, said members being movable so as to form a passageway between each of said door members and a segment of the casing as the door member rotates past or so that there will be no passageway as the door member rotates past the segment, and another door member for closing the space between said separated door members when they are in the relative position with respect to the segments first indicated above.
16. A door structure including in combination a casing comprising two opposed segmental members, a door mounted for rotation within said casing, said door comprising a plurality of door members each of which is constructed and arranged so as to be movable relatively to the other parts of the door and so as to be moved into position either to provide a passageway between such member and a casing segment or so that no passageway is provided between said member and the casing segment, while permitting the door to rotate within the casing.
