CIGAR-CLIPPER AND MATCH-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 1, 1907.
Application filed June 11, 1906. Serial No. 321,296.
of Spokane and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Clippers and Match-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in that class of pocket devices intended for use by smokers in which provision is made to carry matches and to ,cut off .the tips of cigars.
The especial object of the improvements which form the subject matter of this application is to produce a device of this character which will have a maximum capacity for holding matches and which will quickly and effectively cut the tips of the cigars.
In the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this application, I have shown a preferred form of my invention in the following views Figure 1 is a perspective view of a combined match box and cigar tip cutter constructed according to my invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the invention with a portion removed; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the interior parts of the cigar cutting device with the cover and box indicated by dotted lines.
Referring to the details of the drawing, 4 represents a rectangular box of suitable size to fit in the pocket and hold a number of ordinary matches of commerce. To the open end of the box is hinged a cover 5 in which the opening 6 is formed to receive the tip of acigar The cover is cut away for a portion of its length near its free end and the edges of such cutaway portion. are bent inwardly as at 9. Arranged in the cover is a cutting device which consists of the following parts:A plate 10 has one end turned downwardly and is riveted to the free end of the cover. On one end of this plate is secured a block 11 in which a recess 12 is formed which registers with the opening 6 in the cover 5. On the and secured to either or both of said blocks is an expansive coil spring 15 the tension of which is exerted to hold the block 7 in its projected position. The block and its knife 13 are so arranged as to easily slide within the cover. The blocks 7 and 11 may be of any suitable material and may if desired be hollow instead of solid but for cheap construction light wood is sufficient. The roughened portion 7 a not only forms a suitable surface for engagement with the finger or thumb of the user of the device in pushing the block 7 inwardly but it also provides a scratching surface for the matches.
In a device constructed substantially as described, it will be apparent that by inserting a cigar tip through the opening 6 in the cover 5 and into the recess 12 of the block 11 and pushing the block 7 towards the blockll, the cutting edge of the knife 13 will sever the tip of the cigar and when the knife is retracted by the expansive action of the spring 15 the tip will fall from the recess. The cutting edge of the knife being completely housed within the cover 5 there will be no danger of the knife cutting the user or becoming seriously affected by atmospheric conditions. The inturned flanges 9 not only serve as guides for the block 7 in its reciprocal Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In a device of the character stated, a receptacle having a hollow cover with an opening in one side, a fixed member arranged within said cover and having a recess registering with said opening, a push member slidably mounted in said cover and conforming to the shape thereof, a knife secured to said push member, and a spring adapted to hold said push member in its projected position.
2. In a device of the character stated, a receptacle having a hollow cover with an opening in one side and cut away for a portion of its length, a fixed member arranged THOMAS H. DAVIES.
