Be it known that I, BEN T .WrLsom a. citizen of the United Sts-tes, residing :it Nacogdoches, in the county oi Nacogdoches and Ste-te of Tex-ss, have invented certsin new end useful Improvements in Noise-Deadening Means for Drain-Pipes, of which the following is e. specification.
Th;s invention relates to metallic drain pipes for dwellings and particularly of the type embodying an outlet elbow at the lower end from which the drain water passes in its exit from the pipe.
The essentiel feature of the invention resides in the provision of means for preventing the disagreeable sounds issuing from the pipe and caused by the falling wster dropping to the lower end thereof especially during a' rain and some time after a rain, while the water upon the roof or other portion oi the dwelling is' 1being carried ofi through the drain pipe.
The disadvantages or' the common forms of metallic drain pipes subjected to the above conditions 0i service ere apparent from the foregoing and it is the aim or' the present invent-ion to eliminate such disadvantages and ineke the draining oi water from a dwelling through drain pipes of the above mentioned structure, practically noiseless after rainsand during light rains.
For a. full understanding oi the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the detsils of constmction of the means ior effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:

'The invention is very simple and specifically describing the same as applied, the numeral 1 indicates the vertical or body portion of a drain pipe et the lower end oi which is located the elbow 2 through which the drain water passes from the pipe l. The pipe l is of metallic construction end the passage of drain water through the pipe necessarily gives rise to the disagreeable noise incident to the sound caused by the dropping of the water upon the bottom po. tion of the elbow 2 especially einer e rain. 'In carrying out the invention, the bottom portion of the elbow 2 has e base mede of noise deadening material or substance,
shown at 3, which base is attached to the elbow 2 in any suitable wey upon the interior portion ofthe latter, extending the entire length of the elbow so fares the transverse extent o the latter is concerned. The noise deadening base 3 of the elbow 2, with reference to its specific construction, is flat upon its upper side sind is convex upon its under side to conform with the curvature oi'the bottom portion of said elbow 2. Fastenings 4 a're illustrated as the me'tns for attaching the base 3 to the elbow 2, it being understood 'that any substantial and desirable form of fastenings may be utilized.
Various modifications may be made in carrying out the present invention, the broadprinciple involved being to locate at the lower end of e metallic drain pipe l, a noise deedening base or means or' equivelent nature to accomplish the desired result. The modicetions are not illustrated as they may be varied within the contemplation of the invention.
The preferred means for securing the base 3 to the drain pipe l consists of lugs 4 formed at the outer end of the horizontal portion of the elbow 2 and adapted to extend upwardly and engage the outer extremity oi the base 3 to holdthe latter in proper position and prevent likelihood oi rccidental displacement thereof.
In the operation of the invention illustrated in Fig;
'4, the base 3 is formed with an upward extension at its inner. endwhich is designed to insure that the noise desdenng substance will accomplish the desired result, in the practical embodiment or use of the invention.` p
It will be understood that in both of the constructions of the invention illustrated, the interior side portion oi an arm of the elbow of the drain pipe is provided with noise desdening materiel or substance. The specific construction of the noise dendening means es shown in Fig. 4 is especially advantageous with regard more particularly to the formation of the upwardly extending portion of the noise deadening element, whereby a curved delecting surface 7 is provided et the corner of the elbow. The surface 7 is especially desirable by reason of the fact that it docs not tend to abruptly turn the flow oi water or liquid passing through the pipe but causes such flow to gradually pass ofi to the lower arm of the elbow, thus subserving the noise deadening function oi the base 3 constituting the noise deadening element. The lugs si shown in Fig. 3 moet clearly, are preferably integral extensions of the pipe.
