Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CONRAD SCHTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia., in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a sewing machine particularly adapted for folding and stitching tape, ribbon or the like in the manufacture of lace, edgings, trimmings or the like, and its main purpose is to provide improved product and improved means for carrying and feeding the material to be folded and stitched, with a view to increasing the capacity of machines of this Character, saving material and reducing the number of operatives required.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a perspective view of a sewing machine with my improvements attached thereto; Fig. 2 is a sectional view thereof taken transversely to the arm of the machine; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the clutch mechanism for holding the forming device; Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the mechanism taken parallel to the arm of the machine; F ig. 5 is a bottom view in partial section of the upper feeding mechanism, and Fig. 6 is a sectional elevation of part of the lower feeding mechanism.
In practicing the invention, there is suitably employed a usual form of sewing machine comprising the frame l having journaled in its base 2 the crank shaft 3, which operates the shuttle mechanisms 4, and journaled on its arm 5 the crank shaft 6, which is rocked by the shaft 3 through the connecting rod 7, the shaft 6 being connected with and reciprocating the needle bars 8 in the head 9 and operatingthe needles l0 fixed to the respective bars.
In the improvements a Worm ll is placed on the shaft 3 and engages a worm wheel l2 fixed to a shaft i3, which has a gear wheel 14 fixed thereon and is journaled in a bearing l5 on a bracket 16 carried by the frame. The gear wheel 14 engages a gear wheel 17 which is fixed to .a shaft I8, the latter being journaled in bearings 19 and 20 carried by. the bracket, and on the opposite ends of this shaft are fixed the gear wheels 2l and 22.
In a bearing 23 on the bracket 16 is journaled a hollow shaft 24 having fixed to the top thereof a gear wheel 25 engaged and revolved by the gear wheel 22, the shaft having fixed thereto and revolving a yoke 26 in which is journaled the spool 27 for carrying the strip of material 28 to be folded.
Bearings 29 fixed to the lower end of the shaft 24 have journaled therein the feed roller 30 which coacts with the feed roller 3l journaled in a shoe 32, the latter being movable with reference to the bearings 29 under control of an adjusting screw 33 set in the shoe 32 and bearing against a cross piece 34, having the plungers 35 in the springs 36 which are supported in the sockets 37 of the bearings 29.
A beveled pinion 38 is fixed to the roller 30, which it revolves through its engagement with the beveled pinion 39 lfixed to the bearing 23, the material being drawn thus by the rollers between which it passes from the spool.
In the bearing 40 on the bracket I6 is journaled a sleeve 4l which is revolved therein and about the stationary shaft 42 by the gear wheel 2l meshing with a gear wheel 43 fixed to the sleeve.
The shaft 42 and the former 44 fixed thereto are held stationary by a clutch mechanism comprising the pins 45 adapted to engage the sockets 46 in opposite sides of the top of the shaft, these sockets being capped by a disk 47 secured to the shaft and engaging the pins. The pins are carried by the arms 48 and 49 of levers 50 and 5l which oscillate on `the bearings 52 and 53 and are drawn together by the coiled spring 54 connected to them, the levers being guided in their movements by a plate 55 fixed to the bearing 40. A cam 56 fixed to and revolved by the sleeve 4l acts upon the arms 48 and 49 at diametrically opposite points to withdraw the pins 45 alternately, the one holding the shaft 42 while the other is drawn yback to permit the passage of the tape 28 as it is carried through the way 57 in the revolving `sleeve 4l and the eye 58 of the 1inger 59 fixed to the sleeve` The tape, having been folded upon the stationary former 44 by the revolving iinger 59, is carried from the former under the needles l0 and the presser foot 60 vand stitched to the parallel tapes 6l drawn through the passage 62, the stitched fabric being engaged by the rollers 63 and 64 which draw the materials under the needles and presser foot. The roller 63 has journals 65 carried by the hangers 66 which are pivoted to a bifurcated lever 67 fulcrumed on the uprights 68, the roller being pressed down by springs 69. The roller 64, journaled in the/,bearing 70, has a gear wheel 7l fixed thereto which is driven, to effect a positive feed, by a gear `wheel 72 on a shaft 73 carried by a bearing 74. Fixed to the Wheel 72 are the disks 75 and 76, the latter having the flange? 7 thereon. The surface of the disk 75 is engaged by a brake band 78 having one end connected with the frame member 79 and the other connected with the spring 80 supported by the frame member 8l. Engaging the disk 76 is a clutching piece 82 having in the outer end thereof a notch 83 fitting the flange 7 7 the inner end being fulcrumed in a notch 84 in a hub 85 which is sleeved on the shaft 73 and movable relatively to the disk 76.
The hub has projecting therefrom an arm 86, which is connected by a spring 87 with the clutching member and an arm 88 which is connected by a link 89 with a lever 90 rocking on the iulcrum 91, the lever being connected with and operated by the usual feeding mechanism 92. As this mechanism is oscillated the movement of the hub in the direction of the arrow moves the inner end of the clutching member so as to throw it out of the radial line and cause it to grip the iange oi the disk 76 which with the gear wheel 72 is turned forward by the engagement oi the inner end of the clutch member in its seat in the hub. In the movement of the hub in the reverse direction, the spring 87, put under tension by the movement of the arm 86, draws the clutching member back freely upon the disk which is held against rearward movementI by the brake band.
It will now be understood that the revolving main shaft 3, acting through the connections described, simultaneously operates the rollers 30 and 3l to draw the material 28 from the spool 27, revolves the shaft 24 and the sleeve 4l to wind the material upon former 44, reciprocates the feeding mechanism 92 to draw the material under the needle l0 and revolves the rollers 63 and 64 through their connections with the feed mechanism to carry away the finished product.
Having described my invention I'claim:-
1. In combination With sewing mechanism, a material holder, a revolving device with a passage therethrough for revolving said holder and passing material therefrom, rolls carried by said revolving device for drawing material therethrough, a stationary former, and mechanism whereby said material is carried to and wound around said former.
2. In combination with sewing mechanism, a former, a device to which said former is fixed, a clutch mechanism having means which alternate in engaging and disengaging said device to hold it and permit material to be revolved about said device, and means for winding said material around said former,
3. In combination with sewing mechanism, a stationary former, a shaft for supporting said former, a pair of devices adapted for engaging said shaft, and a sleeve revoluble on said shaft and having means for withdrawing said devices alternately from their engagements with said shaft.
4. In combination with sewing mechanism, a stationary formery a device fixed to and holding said former, a pair of reciprocating pins adapted for engaging said device and a revolvingr cam for withdrawing said pins alternately from their engagements.
5. In combination with .sewing mechanism, a bearing, a shaft with a passage therein for a strip of material, said shaft being revoluble in said bearing, means for revolving said shaft, a pair of rolls carried by said shaft for drawing material through said passage, and mechanism whereby the revolution of said shaft revolves one of said rolls.
6. in combination with sewing mechanism, a revoluble member having means for passing a strip of material carried thereby, a stationary former, a second revoluble member having means for passing said strip of material, and mechanism for holding said former, said mechanism being acted upon by said second revolving device to permit the l passage ot' said material.

In combination with sewing mechanism, a bearing, a shaft revoluble in said bearing and having means for passing material carried thereby, a gear wheel fixed to said bearing, a revoluble gear wheel and rollerscarried by said shaft, said gear wheels engaging to operate said rollers, a gear wheel fixed to said shaft, a revoluble shaft anda gear wheel thereon engaging said last named gear wheel, and means for revolving said last named shaft and operating said sewing mechanisms together.
8. In combination with sewingmechanism, a main shaft having a worm thereon, a gear train comprising a worm wheel operated by the worm of said main shaft, a shaft Y connected with and revolved by said gear train and having means for passing materials carried thereby, a sleeve having means for passing material, said sleeve being connected with and revolved by said gear train, a former, a shaft within said sleeve for supporting said former, a clutch mechanism for holding said shaft, and a cam operated by said sleeve to act upon said clutch mechanism so as to permit said sleeve to revolve said material.
