THEODORE G. POWELL, OF MIDDLE RIVER, IOWA.
DOOR-FASTE NER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 24, 1907.
Application filed December 24, 1906. Serial No. 349,211.
To all lwhom t may concern:
Be it known that I, TnEoDoRE G. POWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Middle River, in the county of Madison and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in door locks and has particular reference to a lock designed for temporary use adapted to be secured to the jamb or frame of the door.
The invention aims as a primary object to provide a device of this character which may be readily adjusted in accordance with the varying thicknesses of the doors upon which it may be employed.
The invention aims as a further object to provide a device which may be readily locked or unlocked in its operative or inoperative relation.
It is nally an object of this invention to provide a device which shall be simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and practical and efficient in use.
The detailed construction will appear in the course of the following description in which reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specication, like characters of reference designating similar parts throughout the several views, wherein,
Figure l is a perspective View of a door lock constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a side elevation thereof, the parts being shown in their inoperative or disengaged relation, and Figs. 4 and 5 are respective transverse sections on the lines 4 4 and 5-5 of 2.
The invention specifically comprises two locking members, one of which is normally held stationary and the other of which is movable with relation thereto and is adapted in its locking function to be engaged therewith. The stationary member is designated by the numeral l and comprises a flat metallic strip, having one end bent at an angle to afford a flange 2, by which the strip l is secured in any desired manner to the door jamb or frame The other of said members is designated by the numeral 3 and comprises a section of metal bent upon itself into substantial U shape and overlying the member l on each side. The section 3 is formed at its rear end with spaced extended lugs 4 which are united by a pin 5. The pin 5 serves to pivotally and slidably connect the member 3 with the member l and is accordingly loosely projected through a longitudinal slot 6 provided in the rear-portion of said member l. The member 3 is likewise provided on one side thereof,
at its forward end with an angular flange 7 extending in an opposite direction from the flange 2 and affording a stop against which the door is adapted to abut. Owing t0 the slidable and pivotal connection between the members l and 3, the latter may be moved longitudinally and pivotally with relation to the former to effect any desired adjustment. For the purpose of preventing displacement in the adjusting or setting operation the member l is provided along its upper edge and adjacent its rear end with a series of rack teeth 8 which are designed to be engaged by a cross pin 9 held between the sides of the member 3. The pin 9 thus serves the function of a pawl.
For the purpose of positively locking the member 3 in any position to which it may be set upon the member l, I have provided a leaf spring l0 fixed at 1l to the forward end of said member 3 and having its free end bent as at l2 to afford a linger piece. The spring l0 carries at its free end an inwardly extending pin 13 which in its locking function passes through registering apertures 14 provided in the sides of the member 3 and through any one of a series of alined apertures l5 provided in the member l.
From the foregoing description it will be readily apparent that by raising the member 3 on its pivot to the position of Fig. 3, said member may be moved rearwardly and set in any desired position with relation to the member l., In such position the members 3 and l are interlockingly engaged by the spring l() which snaps its pin 13 into any one of the closely associated apertures I5 adjacent thereto. In moving the member 3 forwardly, the pawl 9 of course rides over the rackv teeth 8.
While the elements herein shown and described are well adapted to serve the functions set forth, it is obvious that various minor changes may be made in the proportions, shape and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having fully described my invention I claim:
1. A door fastener of the type set forth comprising a stationary member adapted to be secured to the jamb of a door, said stationary member' having at its rear end a longitudinal slot and in its forward portion a line of apertures, a second member having a pivot pin working in said slot, and a leaf spring provided on said second member and carrying at its free end a pin projected through an aperture in said second member and designed for engagement with a selected one of said first named apertures. A door fastener of thc type set forth comprising a stationary member adapted to be secured to the jamb of a door, said stationary memberI having at its rear end a projected through an aperture in said second member and 10 longitudinal slot and in its forward portion a line of aperdesigned for engagement with a selected one of said first tures, and being further provided along its upper edge with named apertures.
