SAFETY-TREAD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 17, 1907.-
Ap'piicsson and February 23,1907. serial No. 358,95'7.
To all whom 'it may concern: I I Be it known that l, LoU'rs L. BELLATTY, acitizen of .the- United States of America, and a resident of the borough of Brooklyn, of the city of New York, county and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Safety-Tread, of which the following is a specification, the same lbeiug a full, clear, and exact description of the device, such as will enable others skilledin the art to which it appertains to make and Y use the same. 4
This invention relates to. protective coverings for the feet, and particularly to boots or slips designed to afford a iirm footing or secure hold in places where the derstood, I will proceed to explain the i-raineA by reference to thel drawings which accompany and' form a part of this speci fcation, and in which Figure l. represents a side elevation of a safety tread constructed 'according to my invention and applied to a horses foot; \li`ig. 2 is a rear view of the same detached from the animal; and Fig. 3 isla side elevation of an# other article embodying the in'vention and applied to a boot or shoe.' i i Like'letters of Vreference indicate like parts in all the views.
Referring particularly by reference symbols or chard actors to the drawings, ,A denotes the lower part of my protective coveringconstructed land arranged to be worn the animal in slipperyplaces, where itis liable to slide-'or to losefootiiig,` and consisting of a member formed Vof a chain web or mail'constructed of interwoven metallic links, rings. or scales, the metallic fabric being of suitable sizeto'inclose the hoof and forming, a sole therefor; and B designates the upper membor thereof, preferably used in connection therewith, and ordinarily made of leather or other yielding material, and having a slit ordinarily located in the rear l part thereof, and widened asit approaches the top of the tread, and constructed and arranged when applied to the animal to conform in contour to Vthe shape of the horses leg, and to be fastened thereto, preferably at or near the fetlock, by straps b.
It will be seen that my safety tread may be easily applied'to the horses leg and readily detached therefrom, and that it is durable, andimay be Iworn by the animal without any inconvenience, and also tliat'.the metal antislipping knobs, spurs or projecting portions of the cha-in web, each of which is movable relative to an adjacent one, provide bearing or retaining points which will afford a firm grip or solid hold possible in slippery places, which cannot be otherwise attained.
InFig. 3 the safety tread is shown as applied to an ordinary boot or shoe, where the flexible metallic covering consists of a member A formed of a chain web and designed to inclose the heel, which metallic memberis preferably surmounted by a flexible band B, ordinarily made of leather` the whole being attached to the boot or shoe by means of a strap by.
I wish it to be understood that I do not desire to` be limited to the exact details of construction 'shown and described, for obvious modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art. -V
What I claim as my invention is: 1. A safety tread or Creeper, comprising a flexible metallic body portion formed with i1 plurality of antlsllpping projecting spurs or retaining points. each of which is movable relative ti un adjacent one.
2. A safety tread or creepcr comprising` n flexible metallic body portion formed with a plurality of antlslpping projecting spurs or retaining points, each of which is movable relative lo anadjacent one, and means to attach the saine to the foot in a detachable relation.
Il. A safety tread or Creeper, comprising,y a flexible metallic body portion formed with a plurality of antislipping projecting spurs or retaining points, each of which is movable relative to un adjacent one, and an upper flexible member to pass around the foot.
In'tcstimony of the foregoing specification, I do hereby J. 0mm. Fownns.
