Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 17, 1907.
Application filed March 18,1907. Serial No. 362,846.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BERTRAM N. Soon, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Files, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in temporary binders or filing devices especially adapted for holding newspapers and similar sheets, and its object is to provide a simple device for the purpose which is very cheap to manufacture, strong and durable in construction, and compact and attractive in appearance.
To this end the invention consists in the particular construction, arrangement and combination of parts, all as hereinafter more fully described, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of a device embodying the invention; Fig. 2 an elevation of the rear side of the same; Fig. 3 an enlarged end elevation of the device in open position; Fig. 4 an enlarged sectional View on the line x-x of Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 a similar section on the line y'y.
This temporary file or binder is preferably made entirely of metal, the two parallel side members or rods 1 and 2 being small tubes which are connected by the These members are formed of strips of sheel metal wrapped at one end tightly around one rod, then extending laterally therefrom and bent at right angles. The opposite ends of said strips are cut away or notched at the center and the side portions rolled into eyes to receive hinge pintles 4 which pass through said eyes and through eye-members 5 on the tube 2 each formed of a strip of sheet metal folded intermediate its ends to form an eye and its ends bent to form a ring embracing the tube, with a neck portion 6 connecting the eye and ring. The tube 2 is thus hinge connected to the back members and is adapted to be turned out of contact with the pointed ends of filing or impaling pins 7 which are secured parallel with the back members in openings in the tube 1, said tube 2 being provided with holes in one side to receive said pointed ends of the pins when the tube is turned into contact therewith.
To hold the hinged tube in contact with the filing pins to retain the papers impaled thereon, one or more of the back members has secured to its outer side at one end a flat spring 8 with the free end of said spring extending beyond the hinge, and on the hinge members 5 of said hinge is secured a block forming a shoulder 9 with which the spring engages to yieldingly hold said member and permit the turning thereof against the action of said spring.
A very efiicient, compact and durable construction is secured which is very cheap to manufacture and easily manipulated.
Having thus fully described the invention what I claim is 1. The combination of a tubular member, a series of hu paling pins secured at one end to said member and projecting laterally therefrom, back members secured at one end to the tubular member and extending laterally therefrom a distance and bent at right angles to extend parallel with the pins at a distance to one side of the same, eyes formed on the other ends of said back members, a second tubular member, hinge members secured to said second tubular member and each formed with a neck portion having an eye at its end, pintles engaging the eyes, a shoulder on one of the hinge members, and a spring to engage said shoulder.
2. The combination of a tubular side member, a series of impaling pins extending, upward therefrom, a series of back members each consisting of a strip of sheet metal wrapped around said member at one end and extending laterally therefrom and bent at right angles at a distance from said member and extended upward parallel with the said pin, eyes formed on the upper end of each of the back members, a second tubular side member provided with a series of holes in one end to receive the upper ends of the pins, hinge members consisting of strips of sheet metal each bent to form a ring portion to engage the tubular member and to form an eye connected to the ring portion by a neck portion, pintles engaging the eyes on the-back members and the eyes on the hinge members, a shoulder on one of the hinge members, and a spring secured to one of the back members to engage said shoulder.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BERTRAM N. SCOTT.
