DRILL -Armncrmnim iso. esegesi.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatl, WIL'BnR REUBE'N HITCHCOCK, a
' citizen oi the United` States of America, residing at Cornwall, county of Stormont, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in ,Dr'ill Attachments; and I` doliereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact dei scription of the invention, such'as willl enable others skilled in the art to whichlit appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to drills; the object of my 'in-t vention. is to provide means for attaching a bit to the shank so that there is no danger of detachment in the operation of drilling; a iurtherobject is to provide means for quickly attaching abit; a'further object is to provide aconstruction which will permit the shaft be- -ing constructed oi a softer or cheaper materialV than the bit, `so that a supply of dil-ferent sizes of bits may be carried in a small space, and-will necessitate carrying Ponly one shank; and, my invention consists of the construction, combination and arrangement oi parts, as
- removal of the bit; and,4Fig. 4 is a plan view of the i shank showing thesleeves in section and showing the application of a rose bit. l
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a shank, having the dovetailed slot 2 in one end, adapted to receive the'wedge-shaped shoulder 3 oi the bit, which may be oi any ordinary form of construction.
A friction sleeve zlis disposed on the shank l, and is provided with an enlarged bore 5 at its inner end adapted to pass over the screw-thread 6 formed on the exterior surface of the shank l. By having the bore 5 en larged, a shoulder 7 is left on.` the inside of the sleeve 4,
which isadapted to abut against the screwthreads 6 to limit the movement of the sleeve 4 -upward on the shank 1, and in formingl the slot 2 in the shank, the
netted end isswung outward Slightly, so as to limit the movement ofthe sl'eeve downward, so that the sleeve 4 ,is permanently retained on the shank 1. i i
'With the sleeve 4 in the position shown in Figs. l, 2 and 4, the wedge-shaped portion 3 of the bit is main- V tained in the slot 2, so thatitcannot be'rremoved, while the interiorly screw-threaded sleeve 8, 4in engagement Speeiieation ofLetters Patent, Applies@ ned March 18,1907. serial in. 362,938.

movement.
In the form shownin Fig. 4, the. sleeve 4 is provided 'with'interior screw-threads 9, 'by means of which the lower end of the sleevel is firmly locked against the with the screw-thread 6, rmly locks the. sleeve against shoulderl0 formed on the upper side oi the bit). The
sleeves 4 and 8 may be provided with'recesses 1 1,-
adapted to receive a Spanner, by means ofwhich the sleeves may be tightened up on the screw-threads 6.
By the construction described, in boring a deep hole there is no danger of the sleeve A4 becoming displaced by striking against the walls of the hole as it is bored, which Ahas been a fault withiorms oi drills of this character heretofore used.
Having thus fully describedmy invention, what I Claim as new, and desire to secure -by Letters Patent, isz- 1. In a coupling device for drill bits, ashank provided with a dove-tailed slot, and a kerf ei'rtending therefrom into the-body of`said-shank,a bit, a wedgeshaped coupling member formed integrally therewith and adapted for insertion into and removal from the aforesaid slot, and a sleeve siidably mounted `upon the aforesaid.shank, and
adapted to loverlie 4the Aslot and coupling member therein i to retain the same against removal. i
2. In `a coupling device for drill bits, a shank provided with dove-tailed slot, and a kerf extending therefrom into the body of said shank, a bit, a wedge-shaped coupling member formed integrally therewith'andadapted for insertion into and removal from said slot, shoulders on said bit, a sleeve 'slidably mountedouthe aforesaid shank, said sleeve being adapted to overlie and lock in place the aforesaid coupling member, the lower edge of said sleevey being adapted to4 engage aforesaid bit. l
with the aforesaid shouldenon the 3. In avcoupling device for drill bits, a shank: havinga screw-threaded portion,.'a removable bit adapted to be held in said shank,4 a counterbored lockingrv sleeve slidably mounted on said shank, the counter-bore of said 4sleeve -being adapted to partially inclose the aforesaid threaded portion, and means for locking said'sleeve in operative positiou.
4. In a coupling device for drill bits, a shank, 'havingv a dove-tailed slot inthe end thereof, and a kerf leading from said slot into the said shank, a bit, n wedge-shaped coupling member' formed integrally therewith, retaining shoulders-on said bit, a lockingl sleeve slidahly mounted ou saidshaft, said sleeve adapted to overlie said slot and coupling member to' retain the same in coupled relation,
the lower end of said sleeve being adapted to abut against and rest upon the aforesaid shoulders, anda nut adapted to engagethe aforesaid screw-threads `and bear 'against the upper end of the said sleeve to hold the same against upward movement. vf' In witness whereof I have hereunto set my presence 'of two witnesses. l
