The objelt ol the invention is to provide :i simple, Strong and durable turpenline hiuk. which is ellicicn in operation and inexpensive to nininllnr'lnre, and which presents n reversible lil-ndr: having n plnrnlity ol 5 Cutting edges.

To provide a turpentine hack of ellcient form and Simple construction and in the sinne linie to obviate the loss of time incident to the breaking of the blade, I provide a V-shziped blade having two rotting edges at the opposite sides, the blade being reversible. The blade G has an extended cutting member S integral with the shank 7 and bent back upon itself to constitute a. V-shape, as is shown most clearly in Fig. 2. The opposite edges 9 and i0 of the V-shaped blade member :ire sharpened to constitnie the cutting edges. At its opposite sides the shank 7 is provided with recesses l1.

The shank 7 of the binde is arranged in the opening 4 in the stock and is secured firmly in position by means oi the setscrew 5 which engages a recess 1i in the blade shank. I provide a wedge l2 having at one end a laterally disposed flange `13 and located in the opening 4 between the side of the opening and the shank 7 'in order to incline the shank suitably with respect to the stock to permit the most efficient operation oi the instrument. It will be understood that the shank of pie blade must be inclined with respect to the stock to a. Certain extent, or in using the instrument the hand of .the operator is liable to come in contact with the bark of "4l/'fie tree. The wedge 12 has a thinner end disposed to ward the side of the stock opposite to the V-shaped binde S, the flange 13 engaging the edge of the opening 4.

In using the instrument, the cutting edge toward the hund of the operator is employed in making gashes or boxings in the bark oi' the tree. In case the edge is destroyed or injured the blade can be reversed and the opposite cutting edge used. To reverse the blade it is merely necessary to loosen the set-screw, thereupon withdrawing the Shank from the opening 4, turn the blade about, reinsert the shank into the opening, and again secure the blade in position by means of the setsi-rew 5, the end of the latter engaging the recess 4 in the -edge of the shank.
