7 PATENTED AUG. 27, 19071- G. P. MAGFARLANE 8: G. FERBNBACH.
ROLLS FOR DOUBLING AND TWISTING MACHINES. APPLICATION mum JULY 19. 1906.
UNITED sTATEs PATENT OFFICE.
ROLL FOR DOUBLING AND. TWIS'IING MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 2'7, 1907.
Application filed July 19,1906. Serial No- 326,890.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE F. MACFARLANE and CARL FERENBACH, citizens of the United States, residing at Wilkes-Barre, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rolls for Doubling and Twisting Machines; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to machines for doubling and twisting threads or silk, and more particularly to the rolls used therefor.
The invention comprises the production of a plurality of rolls positioned at an angle to each other, means for driving the .same, and means for guiding threads passed around the same.
The invention further comprises the production of twisting and doubling rolls and means for guiding the thread as it passes therefrom. The object of the invention is the production of a machine for doubling and twisting fibers, and especially silk, so that there will be little or no tendency for the threads or fibers to catch or break near the drawing and evening rolls.
Another object in view'is the production of smooth inclined rolls for permitting threads or fibers to pass around the same without tangling or breaking, and
means for guiding the threads as they pass therefrom. In the accompanying drawings:Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved rolls attached to a spinning frame, unnecessary parts being broken away. Fig..
2 is a top plan view of my improved rollers. Fig. 3 is a detail end view of my rolls looking from the opposite end to that shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a front elevation of my improved rolls showing the guiding spool and the angle of the roll.
In twisting and doubling fibers, and especially silks, it has been customary to use grooved rolls in order to keep the strands separated, and consequently from breaking. The grooved rolls have proven more or less successful, but still the breakage of the threads or strands not entirely'obviated, and it is among the objects of the present invention to construct a device that will prevent the intermixing and breaking of the threads.
The present invention is particularly directed to- The invention is provided with a frame 2 upon which is mounted rolls 3 and 4. The rolls 3 and 4 are provided with suitable journals 55 and 6-6 which nor mally rest within the bearings 7 and 8, 9 and 10. In the present invention I have provided evening rolls 3 and 4 having asmooth periphery around which threads, are wound previous to passing off to the spool upon which the same is finally wound. The thread or strands or fiber are brought through any usual tension and stop motion devices that may be desired, and Wound around the rolls in the usual manner and finally pass off over the roll 11 which is adapted to guide the threads away from the driving mechanism.
The frame 2 is provided with suitable hearings in which the rolls'3 and 4 are journaled. The journals 9 and 10 are preferably on the same horizontal plane, while the journals 7 and 8 are on a different horizontal plane, so that when the roll 3 is mounted therein it will be positioned at any desirable angle as clearly seen in Fig. 4. On one end of the rolls are preferably provided gear wheels 12 and 13 which intermesh with a driving gear 14. In this way the rolls are positively driven and do not depend upon the threads passing around them to revolve them.
In operation the operator takes any desirable number of threads or strands and passes the same any convenient number of times around the rolls 3 and 4, and
finally over the guide roll 11 and thence down to the winding spindles to be wound upon spools contained thereon. Extra care and precaution in winding threads or strands around the rolls need not be taken, as when the rolls begin to revolve the threads will separate and remain apart in the same manner as if grooves had been placed therein because of the angle at which the rolls are positioned. In case of breakage of the threads it will be evident that the same may be connected again with very little trouble or time as there is no grooves or other mechanism necessary to be attended-to.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a frame, of a drawing and evening roll frame secured thereto, bearings formed in said frame, some of Which are positioned upon different horizontal planes, smooth rolls positioned Within said bearings,.one of said rolls being positioned on a horizontal plane, the other of said rolls being positioned at an angle to a horizontal plane, the difference in pitch of said rolls being adapted to guide the threads over the rolls and'prevent the same from becoming tangled, and means for guiding threads from said rolls.
2. In a device of the character described, the combina tion with a frame, of drawing and evening rolls mounted thereon, comprising driving means, a smooth thread bearing surface, and trunnions mounted so as to position one of the rolls on a horizontal plane, and the other of said rolls at an angle to a horizontal plane, the angle of said rolls in relation to each other being adapted to permit the use of smooth rolls and is designed to guide and keep separated the threads as the same pass thereover.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a support; of an evening and drawing roll frame
