LETTER, FIGURE, AND THE LIKE IN RELIEF.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, .losnrn FIscnER, house painter, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Budapest, in the Kingdom of Austria-Hungary, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Letters, Figures, and the Like in Relief; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
The present invention relates to improvements in letters, figures and the like in relief, more particularly letters and figures for signboards or advertisements, which can be produced in a very simple manner, with small expenditure of material and without an expensive installation or plant.
The invention consists in a letter or the like, preferably produced by placing in a mold corresponding to the letter, figure and the like, a mass made of alabasterypsum, deXtrin, glue, cork-flour, pumice stone, and cellulose, preferably in two or more layers separated from each other by any desired insertions, and in such manner that the letter, figure and the like desired is obtained in hollow form.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2 are a front and edge View, respectively, of the completed letter, and Fig. 3 is a cross-section on an enlarged scale through a portion of the mold in which the letter is being formed.
A practical means of forming a letter or the like in accordance with my invention is preferably effected in the following manner: If, for instance, it is desired to produce the letter N a plastic mass is first pre-' pared from alabaster gypsum, dextrin, glue, ground cork, pumice and cellulose or wood pulp, and a layer 2 of it is placed in a mold 1 made of clay, iron or other suitable material, with the letter N in intaglio therein. Upon this layer are then placed any desired insertions 3, such as for instance, wires or easily flexible metal plates, whereupon, after first applying a canvas jute or other packing 4, another layer 5 of the mass aforementioned is spread on the backing. This coating can be repeated one or more times. After the setting of the layer last applied, the mold is emptied whereupon the letter N is obtained in hollow relief, the outer surface of the relief, after a treatment in an oil bath, being finally provided with a glaze or varnish, or is plated, bronzed or enameled or otherwise ornamented. Lugs 6 for fixing are preferably embedded in the said mass at the ends or at other suitable points of the relief to be produced.
Relief letters, figures and the like produced according to this invention, resist exceedingly well all out side influences, are verylight and cost very little, as neither the material, nor the labor and accessories required, are costly.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a letter or the like formed of two layers of plastic material separated by a layer of textile material, and strengthening insertions.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a letter or the like formed of two layers of plastic material separated by a layer of textile material and metallic strengthening insertions.
3. A new article of manufacture, a letter or the like formed of two layers of plastic material separated by a layer of textile material and strengthening insertions, the surface of the letter being provided with a coating.
4. As a new article of manufacture, a letter or the like formed of two layers of plastic material separated by a layer of textile material and strengthening insertions, the surface of said letter being oiled and coated.
