Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed November 26,1906. Serial No. 345,080.
To all whom it may concem:
Be it known that I, THOMAS A. PARKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at High Point, in the county of Guilford and State of North Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gun-Barrels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to gunban'els, and more particularly to the bore thereof.
The object of the invention is to increase the velocity and penetrative power of the charge, and also to seatter it. V
In the accompanying drawing a longitudinal sectional view of a gun-barrel embodying the present invention is shown.
Referring specifically to the drawing, 5 denotes a gun-barrel, and 6 the bore thereof having a shell-chamher 7 as usual. The bore tapers from the shell-chamber to a point 8 which is a short distance from the muzzle. For a short distance from the point 8 the taper is at a greater angle or more abrupt as from 8 to 9. Beyond the end of the tapered portion of the bore and extending to the muzzle thereof, the bore is flared as indicated at 10. The taper from the shell-chamber to the point 8 serves as a choke which increases the velocity and p enetrative power of the shot, and the flared portion from the end of the taper to the muzzle tends to scatter the shot. I therefore, obtain the velocity and penetration of a choke-bore gun, and at the same time the shot is scattered.
I claim:
A gun-barrel having a bore tapered for a portion of its length, and flared from the end of the taper to the muzzle, the length of ,the tapered portion exceeding the length of the flared portion.
