A vertical stirrer-shaft C is journaled in the center oi the cove r, having its lower portion, extending into the tub, provided vwith a suitable stirrer-head (shown' in dotted lines in Fig. 2 of the drawings), and the por tio'n above the cover provided with a beveled pinion c, that is engaged by a beveled gear 01 on the adjacent end 'of a-horizontallydisposed drive-shaft D, which latter is journaled in standards secured to and arising from the screw-plate of the supporting-frame a. Between the top of the tub and said stud g, supporting-plate G is ppovided with anotherv outwardlyprojecting bearing j, uponwhich a large gear J is journaled. This is actuated by thelever 1:, and is adapted to engage the pinion h and revolve the fiy-wheel at a comparatively high-speed. In order to enable said lever to actuate gear J, I provide the lever with a vertically elongated slot 7c, and provide gear I with a wristpin K, which projects outwardly from oneof its arms, through the said sl ot k. The slot I0 is of a length corresponding to the dijnieter of the perimeter of the wristpin, and as said lever is movedback and forth it, through the medium of said wrist-pin, revolves the gear I, In order to avoid interference with pinion k, I provide the lever, below said slot, with a transversely elongated open irame- M. The longitudinal sides of this frame are, preferably, struck from the center of the fulcrum of the lever, and are sufliciently far apart to clear thesaid pinion h as the lever is moved back and forth.
The operation of my invention is such that when the lever F is operated, its reciprocations will be limited by the wrist-pin K, and the likelihood of the wrist-pin getting in such positionthat, when at rest, it will be impossiblecto move the lever, is very remote, because the momentum of the fiy-wheel will, whenthe lever, is
released, carry the said wrist-pin past the position of the gear where a dead center is likely to occur. I What I claim as new is:' A 1. In a mechanical movement for washing machines, a vertical rotary reciprocal stirrer-shafts rotary" reciprocal .drive shaft the axis of which is at an angle thereto, and a .pinion at the end thereof opposite said stirrer shait, in 4 combination with a vertically disposed lever of the second class, a segmental-rack carried thereby and engaging said pinion, 'a'flywvheel the ,axle of which is parallel to that of said drive-shaft and means for transmitting the motion of said lever to said fiy-wheel. v r
2. In a mechanical movement for washing machines, a
- vertical rotary stirrer-shaft, and-a horizontally disposed 'driveshaft connected to the same, in combination with a vertically disposed lever of the second class actuating said drive-shaft, a fly-wheel the axis of which .is parallel to that of said drive-shaft, and means'for transmitting the motion .of said lever to said fiy-wheel.
4. In a mechanical movement for washing machines, a
vertical rotary stirrer-shaft, and a horizontally disposed drive-shaft connected to the same, in combination with a vertically disposed lever of the second class actuating said that of said drive-shaft, a' gear the axis of which is parallel to that of said fly-wheel for transmitting the motion-of said lever to said fly-wheel.
5. In a mechanical movement for washing machines, a

In a mechanical movement for washing machines, a vertical rotary reciprocal stirrer-shaft, and a horizontal rotary reciprocal drive-shaft engaging the same, in combination with a vertically disposed lever for actuating said drive-shaft, a fly-whecl the axis of which is parallel to said drive-shaft and mediate the same and the fulcrum of said lever, a gear revolved by said lever the axis of which is parallel to and between the axes of said drive-shaft and fly-wheel to which latter it transmits motion.

In a mechanical movement for washing machines. a vertical rotary reciprocal stirrer-shaft, and a horizontal rotary reciprocal drive-shaft engaging the same, in combination with a vertically disposed lever for actuating said drive-shaft, a fly wheel the axis of which is parallel to said drive-shaft and in the same vertical plane therewith and mediate the same and the fulcrum of said level, a gear revolved by said lever, the axis ofwhich is parallel to and between the axes of said drlve-shaft and fly-wheel to which latter it transmits motion.
9. In a mechanical movement for washing machines a vertical rotary reciprocal stirrer-shaft, and a horizontal rotary reciprocal drive-shaft engaging the same, in conibination with a vertically disposed lever for actuating said drive-shaft having a transversely elongated opening therein. a fly-wheel the axis of which is parallel to said driveshaft and extends out through said opening mediate the axis of the drive-shaft and the fulcrum of said lever, a gear revolved by said lever. the axis of which is parallel to and between the axes of said drive-shaft and fly-wheel to which latter it transmits motion.
10. In a'mechanical movement for washing machines, a vertical rotary reciprocal stirrer-shaft. and a horizontal rotary reciprocal drive-shaft engaging the same, in combination with avertically disposed lever which actnates said drive-shaft. and has a longitudinal slot therein, and a transversely elongated opening therein below said. slot, :3. fly-wheel having a wrist-pin engaging said slot the axis of which extends through said transverse opening, is parallel to said drive-shaft and mediate the same and the fulcrum of said lever, a gear revolved by saidlever the axis of which. is parallel to and between the axes of said driveshaft and fly-wheel to which latter it transmits motion.
