PATENT OFFICE.
LUCILE A. BAOHMAN,
OF THREE OAKS, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO THE WARREN FEATHERBONE COMPANY, OF THREE OAKS, MICHIGAN.
BUST-FORM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 6, 1907.
Application filed May 11, 1907. Serial No. 373,171.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUCILE A. BACHMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at the village of Three Oaks, county of Berrien, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bust Forms or Pads, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in bust forms.
The main objects of this invention are, first, to provide an improved bust form which, although very light in weight, is adapted to retain its form for along period of time, and is a form which is adapted to various figures. Second, to provide an improved form or pad in which the outer portion or casing may be readily removed for the purpose of laundering and the like.
Further objects, and objects relating to details of construction, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and'means described in the following specification.
The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure embodying the features of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which,
Figure 1 is a front View of a bust form embodying the features of my invention; Fig. 2 is a rear view thereof; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section thereof; Fig. 4 is a rear view of one of the inner casings, a part of the rear wall thereof being broken away to better show the structure; and Fig. 5 is arear view of the inner casing or pad proper of the central member 2, a portion of the rear wall being removed to better show the structure.
In the drawing, similar numerals of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawing, my improved bust form comprises a pair of similar main or side members 1 preferably oblong in form, as illustrated. In connection with these side members is preferably used a central member 2. The main or side members are secured together at their inner ends preferably in a spaced relation, as by the ribbons 3. The central member is secured to the side members at their upper edges, preferably by the stitches 4.
This bust form is adapted to be secured at the upper edge of the corset, and to be supported thereby. Other supporting means, however, might be provided.
Each member 1 comprises a front wall or outer portion 5, preferably of a light or sheer fabric, gathered or shirred at its edge to give it the desired fullness and curvature. This shirring or gathering has a further advantage of permitting the form to be adjusted and fitted to varying sizes and forms of figures.
The rear wall or inner portion 6 of the outer casing is preferably made up of two pieces arranged with their meeting edges overlapped to form a central vertical slit-like opening, as 7 through which the inner casing, containing the padding material, may be inserted or removed. The edges of the inner and outer portions are preferably secured together by a binding 7 which is securely stitched thereon. The inner casing consists of the front wall or outer portion 8, suitably shirred, as is the front wall of the outer casing described, to give it the desired curvature and fullness. The rear wall or inner portion 9 is preferably substantially smooth, as clearly appears in Fig. 4. The front and rear walls are preferably secured together by a binding as 10 stitched thereon. A suitable filling or padding, as 11, for the inner casing, is provided, preferably cotton, hair, or the like. At the lower edge of the inner casing I secure a longitudinal stiffening strip 12. The inner casing is also held in its distended position by vertically-arranged stiffening strips 13, which are secured at their lower ends to the stiffening strip 12, their upper ends preferably being secured to the binding. These stiffening strips 13 are preferably stitched, throughout their length, to the rear wall. By thus forming the inner and outer casings, the inner casing containing the padding material can be readily inserted or removed from the outer casing when it is desired to launder the same. By arranging the opening on the outer casing as shown and described, the inner casing is effectively retained therein without otherwise securing thereto, although, if desired, it may be adjusted and pinned or otherwise secured in the. desired position in the outer casing, thereby varying to some extent the shape of the form and thus rendering it more adaptable. By inclosing.
the padding material entirely within the inner casing, the form itself is fluffy and unobtrusive, and, while the same retains its shape for a long period, it is comfortable and easy for the wearer. It is also very light and durable.
The central member 2 is preferably used in connection with the side or main members described. This preferably consists of an outer casing made up of a front wall or portion 14, suitably curved, and an inner wall 15 made up of two pieces overlapped to form a central opening 16. The inner casing 17 is provided with a suitable filling or padding material 18. To support the inner casing, I preferably provide the same with a vertically-arranged stiffening strip 19, which is secured to the rear wall thereof, and at its ends to the binding 20 for the edges of the inner casing. This effectively supports the same, and, at the same time, permits its yielding to conform to the figure of the wearer.
I have illustrated and described my improved bust form in detail in the form preferred by me on account of its structural simplicity and economy. I am, however, aware that it is capable of considerable variation in structural details without departing from my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
