No. 862,101. PATENTED JULY 30, 1907. P..E. OSWALD'.
HAIR DRYING 00MB.
APPLICATION FILED APR.1A6,1907.

Specification of. Letters Patent.
Patented' Juiy 30,1907.
i Appiimitm fried Api-ii 16,1907. Soiano. 368.581.
'l'o all nih/m1 'il 'muy ('o'ntmn:
le it known that l, PAUL the United States, residing oi lios Angeles. and State ol E. Oswfuini, a citizen ot in lios Angeles, eounty ("alitornia, have invented new. und useful linprovenieius in llaii'fllryine t`onibs` ot' whieh the following is a .speeith-ation.
My invention relates to a eoinh for use in drying;- hair, in whit-h the teeth'are heated by an eleetrit' t'uirent7 and thtl objeet is to provide nieans in the baekot wet the eoinb lor heating the teeth, whereby, when-they` sut-h easing, and when air w; inade hollow, thereby requiringr teeth ot' considerable size and tht` air-was loi-eed through the easingund teeth,
In this eonstriu-tion the lit-atingl (foil in the hack ol the toinb is surrounded byu uit' tlianihtr loi'iued by the easing` and nioislure van easily reat-h the heating eoil. ln ease the operator wais, earn-less and dipped the eoinb nto water while using the saine the oil would be short t-ireuited and burnout. The air t-lnuuber .surrounding theeoil eauses lossof heat. lMakingtheieethseparute troni the bat-l; also results in a loss of heat.. (Hinsing the air to be delivered at the end ol tht` teeth results in t-ooliiig the ends of the teeth thereby resulting;I in 'a loss ol etlieient'y. ln in)r iniproved onib [lu-se det'oets are :t voided, und a inore etlieient di ing' t'oiub is produced. ln the drawings; Figure l is a side elevation partl in set-tion ot inyY improved eonib. Fig, 2 is a View of Fie', Il shownl a spur-ing washer. Fig,
one ol' the tet-th. l shows u detail ot tho heating' element.
' ln the drawings is a hundltx prel'eiahly hollow und ln this handle is set'ured a vylindrieal tube ti on which are tnounted teeth T whit-h are sepaH ixtted b washer o. These teeth :ire ol uietul preti-rablv ol' alnininiuin as that is a/ligflit und strong uieal 'l`ht artl stzunped nud u hurl)y lgood eondut-tor olheat. troni .sheet iutlul or east as desired. is Ienti -A\'liudrieul ex'teriorljY und 'the lower portion iii ilu" upper por- 't'he upper portion Iuperls to a point :o` shown in Fig. 2. tinii is a hole or bore 5t whit-h just titsA upon tubi` t. 'll'ix usher husa like bortlt) and in tln'l t'orinution ot' applied these teethwere it' desired, but l prefer to take compressed graphite 01' sheet niet-al ol the desired length and eut slits in the saine as shown in Fig.' 4, and torni the saine around the insulating sleere 1.5, whit-h surrounds the bindit [rod vtl in the center ol the tube when iorined or use. In assembling the parts rod l-t would be provided with a. head l5, a washer lt would then be threaded upon the rod and then an insulating washer l7 and thenthe irisul-ating;l sl .we would be placed upon the rod. The heating elenient would then be lorined around the iusulating sleeve with the terminal wires 19 eonneeted thereto` the'outside lining,r would then be put on, when the saine would be slipped into the tube, vsnugly fitting the'interiiir thereof. A tooth and then a washer would alternately he threaded upon the exterior of the tube. until the required number of teeth were used. An insulating washer 20 would then be slipped upon the outside of the tube. A metallic washer 2l with apertures therein for the passage therethrough ot the tei-.fii-
iial wires would then be threaded upon the holt, and then a. -iiut 22 would then beserewed upon the end oi the bolt until the washers ltiand 2l. were in tirni eontaet with tube 6. 'lhe tube would then be inserted in the handle Iand'prt-ssed so as to brineT allthe parts in close engagement, when the tube would be secured in the handle by the screw 24. By this orin of construction it will be seen that the teeth and washers torni the outside ot the bael: ot the eoinb, and that each tooth is a unitary body and that they taper downwardly to the point, thereby giving a tooth o great strength and pro-v '\'iding a body whieh keeps a uniform heat on that` edge ol the tooth which eontaets with the dainp hair as it is l being drawn therethrough, thereby providing a unit'orin heatto sueh eontaetinf.;A edge.
'\\'here it is desired to use air in Connection with my eoinb l perfor-ate the teeth below the Washers by a, per; loi-ation 25, in which perloratioiis are received a tube 2o, the iunei'end oi which is eonneeted to a. rubber bulb 27 haring a. eheek valve 28 on the end thereof which perniits'the air to pass into the bulb. This rubber bulb is preferably housed in the hollow handle. Between the teeth` tube lt is provided with'vports 29 whieh are preterably placed between every second tooth and projet-ting:r downwardly, the outer endet the tubel is' elosed by screw 30 wliieh passes through the outer tooth and serewsinto the end ol the tubetthereby tlosing the s-.uue and holding the tube in place. A S the eonib is being" used the bulb can be squeezed te l'oree thefair out through the hair. As the tube wilh heeoino more or less heated the air will also be more or less heated, thereby being better adapted to carry off moisture. `lt will boseen by this construction that it is impossible lor moisture to penetrate to the heating element even though `the back of--tlnggb is immersed in Water, and that all danger ol short circuiting thellenling element is avoided.
Having described lny invention what I claim is:-
lo .k drying; comb connu-innig; a handle; a metallic tulle secured in said handle; triangular shaped teeth separated by washers mounted upon said tube a rod passing through said tube; closure plates for the ends of said tube on said rod; an nsulatink1 sleeveou Said rod; a heating element around said sleeve; a thin insulating lining within Said ltube and in Contact therewith and with said heating eiement: and wires secured to said heating element.
'2. in a drying,r comb n triangular shaped tooth havingr n perforation yin the upper portion thereof; in combination wiih'juheating element passing through said perforation.
S.' In n. drying comb u handle; a metallic tube secured in said handle: teeth snpnrnied by washers mounted upon suini lube. Siiid teeth having.,r apertures therein below Said Vgnu u rod passing through said-tube: closure plates for upon the end of snid tube: end a check vulve in the end ol' said bulb.
[n witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed niy naine this 8th day of April, 1907.
