To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ADELPHIA A. GAY'LORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Joseph, in the county of Champaign and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Vehicle-Body, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to vehicle bodies and has for its object to improve-the construction and increase the etficicncy and utility of devices of this character.

With these and other objects in view which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which corresponding parts are denoted by like designating characters, is illustrated the preferred form of the embodiment of the invention capable of carrying the same into practical operation, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention within the scope of the appended claims.

The improved devices may be embodied in any of the various vehicle bodies which are oblong in form, and for the purpose of illustration are shown applied to a conventional structure of this class in which the main or body portion is represented at 10 and with an ele vated intermediate seat 11 and with the rear or tail end 12 hinged at 13 to the body.

' The tail board is provided with folding stays or suspension members 14 by which it is supported in open position, as shown in Figs. 1. and 2, and the body 10 is provided with spring catches 15 to hold the tail board in closed position.

Slidably disposed within the body 10 is an extension member 16 adapted to be projected rearwardly of the body and upon the tail board 12 when the latter is in open position, as in Figs. 1 and 2. The upper edge of the tail board is provided with a stop clip 17, against which the extension member 16 bears, to prevent displacement thereof. By this simple means the capacity of the body may be materially increased without material increase in weight or expense. The momber 16 being open at the inner end does not interfere with the ordinary uses of the body 10 when the extension member is in withdrawn position and does not re duce the capacity of the body except to the limited extent embraced by the thickness of the sides, ends and bottom of the extension.

Disposed transversely of the forward end of the body 10 is a partition 18 forming a receptacle 19 and provided with a closure 20 hinged at 21 to the forward or dashboard portion 22 of the body. The closure 20 is provided with a suitable lock 23, and also provided with seat ends 24, hinged at 25, to the lower side of the closure and foldable within the receptacle when not required, as in Figs. 1 and 5 and adapted to be distended as in Figs. 2 and 3, when the closure 20 is used as a seat.

The combined forward receptacle and seat will be provided with a suitable cushion which is not shown, as it forms no part of the invention, and as its presence would obscure some of the parts. The dashboard 22 thus serves the two-fold purpose of a dashboard and as a back support for the occupant of the forward seat when thus employed.

Slidably disposed within the body 10 and adapted to be retained beneath the main seat 11, is a receptacle 26 having a detachable closure 27, and back rest 28, the latter adapted to bear against the rear face of the back rest portion of the seat 11, as in Fig. l. Hinged at 29 to the ends of the receptacle 26 are seat ends 30 adapted to be folded into the receptacle when not in use, as in Figs. 1 and 6, or projected above the ends of the recep tacle when in use, as in Figs. 2 and 4.

The receptacle 26 is provided with a suitable lock as at 31, to enable it to be secured in its position beneath the seat 11, as in Fig. 1. The receptacle will be provided with a suitable cushion, but this is not shown, as it forms no part of the invention and would obscure some of the parts.

With a device thus arranged the efficiency and utility is materially increased and without material increase in expense or weight.

The receptacles 19 and 26 may be utilized for containing any required articles, and locked against surreptitious removal.

If required the extension member 16 may be disposed beneath the seat 11 when not required, and the combined receptacle and seat 26 disposed at the rear of the body and the tail board closed.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed 1. The combination with a vehicle body including an elevated intermediate seat, of a receptacle adapted to be withdrawn, beneath said seat and with a detachable closure and an elevated rear side for bearing against the rear of said seat when the receptacle is in attached position.

2. The combination with a vehicle body including an intermediate elevated seat and a downwardly swinging tail board, of a receptacle adapted to be withdrawn, be-

neath said seat and with an elevated rear side bearing against the rear of said seat when the receptacle is attached, an extension to said body slidable therein and adapted to bear upon said tail board when in projected position and means for preventing the rearward movement of said extension.

3. The combination with a vehicle body including an intermediate seat and a downwardly swinging tail board, of an extension member slidable within said body and adapted to bear upon said tail board when in projected position and means for preventing the rearward movement of said extension when in projected position.
