To all 'whom it may concern:
,P- Be it known that I, PETER KEEPP, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lathes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in lathes, and the invention relates more particularly to lathes employed for finishing the ends of axles.
The primary object of this invention is the provision of novel means inconnection with a lathe for machining and cutting the annular grooves in the ends of axles, which will receive the end of the skein of the hub of the wheel.
My invention aims to provide novel means for auto-` matically feeding a piece of work within the lathe, such as the end of an axle, also novel means for releasing the automatic feeding mechanism at a predetermined time. To this end, l have devised a lathe wherein certain novel features of construction are embodied in order that a piece of work may be performed and finished with considerable rapidity, at the same time insuring accuracy and well finished work.
With the above and other objects in view, which will more readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and relerring to the drawing accompanying this application, like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several Views, in which Figure l is a side elevation of a lathe constructed in accordance with my invention, Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same, showing a piece of work therein, Fig. 3 is an end view of my improved lathe, Fig. 4 is'an end view of the improved chuck used in connection with the lathe, Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the same, Fig. 6 is a detail view of the automatic feed mechanism, Fig. 7 is a detail view of the improved form of eccentric used in connection with the feed mechanism, Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the spring used in connection with the feed mechanism, Fig. 9 is a longitudinal sectional view of one end of an axle, after being operated on by the improved device.
As heretofore stated, the primary object of my invention is to provide a machine for producing the annular grooves or recesses 1 within the end of an axle 2, and when the piece of work is to be performed, an axle is in two sections, whereby the one end of the axle can be operated upon within a lathe and removed, and then the other section placed in the lathe. When the ends of the axle have been completed, they are welded together by a suitable process.
My invention resides entirely in a lathe employed for producing the annular groove or recess 1 of the axle 2, and in putting my invention into practice, I construct a bed plate 3, which is substantially rectangular in plan, and is provided with depending legs or supports 4. The side rails 5, 5 of the frame 3 are provided with tracks 6, 6, and guide flanges 7, 7 and upon these tracks is slidably mounted a crossr head 8. The cross head isformed with two depending sides 9, 9 which extend under the side rails of the frame 3, and upon the cross head is constructed a dove-tail rib or tongue 10 and an upwardly extending bracket 11 at each end..
Slidably mounted upon the cross headl are two jaws 12, 12, said` jaws having dove-tail grooves 14 formed in their under faces to engage the rib or tongue 10, said rib or tongue being adapted to guide the jaws 12, 12 when they are moved. To move the jaws, 1 employ screws 15, l5, having right and left hand threads which are revolubly mounted in the brackets 11, 1l and are adapted to respectively engage the bodies of the jaws 12, 12 by their reversely formed threads. One of the screws upon the operating side of the lathe,` is provided with a hand wheel 16 of a conventional form carrying an adjustable and detachable lever 17. The jaws 12,
12 have their confronting` faces recessed as at 18, 18 to grip a piece of work, which in this instance is the axle2.
Adjustably mounted upon the side rails 5, 5 of the frame 3 is a lathe body 19, carrying two bearings 20, 20. In the bearings 20, 20 are mounted bushings 21, 21, arid in said bushings is journaled a shaft 22 upon which is keyed a pulley or belt wheel 23, said pulley er belt wheel being located between the bearings 20, 20. The shaft 22 is formed with a longitudinally disposedbore 24, which is contracted at one end as at 25. The opposite end of the shaft adjacent tothe bore 24 is provided with a screw threaded recess 26, to receive the screw threaded sleeve 27 of a chuck device 28. The chuck device is provided with two outwardly extending arms 29, 29, and adjustably mounted in each arm are jaws 30 and 31, said jaws being retained in the arms by bolts and nuts 32, 32 and set screws 33, 33, said set screws being employed to adjust the jaws 31. The jaws 30 and 31 together with the chuck device are employed for holding the diametrically opposed cutters 34, 34, said cutters being employed to form the annular grooves or recesses l in an axle.
The end of the shaft 22 opposite the chuck device 28 is provided with a contracted portion 35, and upon this contracted portion is mounted a washer 36, an eccentric 37 and a washer 38. The washers 36 and 38 arel mounted upon the contracted portion 35 of the shaft 22, and are connected together by a set screw 39, said set screw passing through the eccentric 37 into the end of the shaft 22, thereby locking the washers together with the eccentric upon the end of the shaft. The eccentric is slotted, as at 40, in order that it may be adjusted upon the contracted neck portion of the shaft 22, this adjustment being accomplished by the screw 39 passing through the upper end of the slot 40, as at 41. Surrounding the eccentric 37 is a band or rim 42 which carries an outwardly extending arm 43, the object of which will be presently described.
In the bore 24 of the shaft 22 is mounted a socket 44 adapted to hold the spindle end 45 oi an axle while the same is being operated upon. The socket 44 is carried by a rod 46 which extends through the contracted bore 25 of the shaft 22 and is provided with a coiled spring 47 upon its outer end, said coiled spring being confined upon the rod by an adjustable washer 48 and an upwardly extending guide arm 49, which is carried by the end of the frame 3, said guide arm serving to support the outer end oi the rod 46.
As the axle or piece of work to be operated upon is clamped between the jaws l2, l2, it is necessary that these jaws, together with the piece oi work be fed forward in order that the cutters 34, 34, may engage the axle 2 to form the annular groove or recess l, To accomplish this, I provide one ot the depending sides 9 oi the cross head 8 with an outwardly extending arm 50 in the lower end of which is threaded a rod 51, carrying upon one end a hand wheel or lever 52, while its opposite end is journaled in a bracket 53 carried by one of the side rails 5 of the frame 3. The extreme end oi the rod 51 is provided with a ratchet wheel 54, which is normally engaged by the arm 43 oi the eccentric 37.
Upon the rod 5l is loosely mounted an L-shaped lever 55 having a weighted end 56. The opposite end of the lever is engaged by a spring 57 which is secured to the side rail of the frame 3. The spring is notched, as at 58 to normally hold the lever in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 6 of the drawings. In connection with the lever' 55 I have provided the cross head 8 with a rearwardly extending rod 59 having a screw threaded end 60, upon which is mounted a nut 61. The nut 6l. is adapted to strike the spring 57 and move it to release the end oi the lever 55, whereby the weighted end 56 of said lever will elevate the opposite end of the lever, causing it to impinge beneath the arm 43 and release it from the ratchet wheel 54. The object of the construction employed in connection with this feed mechanism will presently appear, in the general operation oi the lathe.
Operation. In Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, I have illustrated the end oi an axle as mounted between the jaws l2, 12 and extending through the sleeve 27 of the chuck device 28, into the bore 24 oi the shaft 22. The cup-shaped portion 62 oi the axle is preferably clamped between the jaws l2, 12 oi the cross head 8, whereby the annular iace63 of the cup-shaped portion will coincide with the chuck device 28 and be in longitudinal alinement with the cutters 34, 34 oi said device. When the shaiti22 is rotated through the medium of the pulley or belt wheel 23, the chuck device 28 -is revolved, and in order to move the cutters 34, 34 of said device into engagement with the cup-shaped portion 62 oi the axle, the rod 51 is rotated through the medium of the arm 43 and the ratchet 54, together with the eccentric 37. As said rod is rotated, the threads of said rod operating in the arm 50 of the cross head 8, carry said cross head towards the chuck device 28, this movement being gradual in order to iced the piece of work-as it is oper-f ated upon by the cutters 34, 34 of the chuck device. To determine when the groove or recess l has been cut a proper depth, the nut (il is set a prescribed distance upon the rod 59 oi the cross head 8, whereby as said cross head travels inwardly, said nut will strike the spring 57, release the lever 55, and elevate the arm 43, whereby the further rotation of the shaft 22 will not effect the ieeding mechanism and move the piece of work any further towards the chuck device 28. During this operation, the rod 46 is moved rearwardly, and when the piece of work has been nished, the coiled spring 47'is adapted to return said rod to its normal position, while the cross head 8 is returned to its normal position by rotating the rod 5l. The jaws 12, 12 can be moved through the medium of the screws 15, l5, and it is thought in view ot the drawings, that the manner of adjusting the cutters 34, 34 is obvious, and therefore need not be described in detail.
1 do not care to confine myself to the type of chuck t0 be used in connection with the lathe, as my invention resides particularly in the construction oi the shaft 22 together with the feed mechanism and means for governing the same.
Such changes in the construction and operation, as are permissible by the appended claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope l of the invention.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isz- 1. In a device oi the class described, a supporting frame, a hollow shaft mounted for rotation on said frame and carrying a hollow cutter at one end, a gripping device movable upon said frame and provided with means for hold ing the work being, operated upon by the cutter, a threaded shaft mounted for rotation upon said frame and engaging a threaded portion of said gripping device, a ratchet wheel carried by said threaded shaft, and an eccen tric carried by said hollow shaft, a pawl operative by said eccentric and engaging said ratchet wheel, a lever having a weighted arm secured on said threaded shaft and arranged to engage the pawl, a resilient catch carried by said frame and yieldably engaging said lever having a weighted arm, and holding the same in inoperative posi tion relative to said pawl, and means actuated by said gripping device for releasing said catch when said gripping device arrives at a certain predetermined position.
2. In a device of the class described, a supporting frame, a main shaft mounted for rotation on said frame and earrying' a hollow cutter at one end, a gripping device movlable on said frame and provided with means for holding the work being operated upon by the cutter, a .threaded shaft mounted for rotation upon said frame and engaging a threaded portion of said gripping device, a ratchet wheel carried by said threaded shaft, an eccentric carried by said main shaft, a pawl operative by said eccentric and engaging said ratchet wheel, a lever having aweighted arm secured on saidl threaded shaft and arranged to engage the pawl, a resilient member swinging upon said frame and provided with an intermediate recess adapted to engage said lever having a weighted arm and hold the same yieldably out of engagement with said pawl, and means actuated by said gripping device for disconnecting said resilient member from said weighted lever arm to permit the latter to release said pawl when said gripping device arrives at a certain predetermined position.
