Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, THOMAS OMALLEY and JAMEs JOHN OMALLEY, residing at Martins Ferry, in the county of Belmont and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Mechanical Plate-Catcher, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to improvements in sheet and tin plate rolling machines and more specifically is in the nature of a means for catching the packs or sheets as they are passed through the rolls and for raising the said packs sufficiently above the rolls, so that the roller, who stands on that side of the rolls opposite the catcher, can conveniently take hold of the said packs, to again feed them to the rolls.
Our invention seeks to provide a means of the character stated, of a simple and economical construction, arranged to be controlled by the roller and actuated at predetermined times, and it consists in the peculiar cooperative arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, specifically pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accom panying drawings, in which:-
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a rolling mill with our catcher applied, the same being shown in position for catching the tin sheets or pack as they pass from the rolls. Fig. 2, is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 3, showing the catcher raised with the tin pack or sheets above the rolls. Fig. 3, is a longitudinal section of the machine with our improvements and taken substantially on the line 33 on Fig. 1. Fig. 4, is a detail view which illustrates the clutch devices and controlling means therefor.
In the practical application of our invention, the same is preferably constructed in the nature of an attachment for tin plate mills, but we desire it understood that while we have so illustrated our invention, the same, in building the mill, may be as a permanent part thereof.
In the drawing 11 designate the side members of the usual mill frame in which the rolls 2 are mounted and-arranged to be driven in the usual manner.
The shafts of the rolls 2 are suitably mounted in bearing boxes, and one of the shafts, preferably the upper, has a series of radial seats or concavities 20, adapted to detachably receive the projecting lugs 15 of a sprocket wheel 15 which forms the driver for actuating the catcher operating means presently referred to.
15 designates upper bearings for the sprocket wheel carrying shaft, which are held down by the screw 15 as shown.
10-10 designate a pair of vertical standards located at opposite sides of the machine and which extend a suitable distance above the side members 1 of the mill frame, the upper ends terminating in bearings 10 in which is journaled a shaft 9 and which carries at one end a chain wheel 12 about which takes the endless drive chain 13 which also engages the chain sprocket wheel 15 on the outer end of the upper roll shaft, and the said shaft 9 has a second chain wheel 14 of like diameter of wheel 12, about which takes a second endless drive chain 4 which imparts motion to the chain wheel 16 on a shaft 17 mounted in bearings 18 on the bracket members 19 that are formed integral with or fixedly secured to the vertical standards 10, from which they project rearwardly of the machine.
The shafts 9 and 17 each carry a disk 20-20 fixedly held to turn with the shafts and to each disk 20 is adjustably mounted an eccentric comprising a disk 21 and a divided strap or band 22 and which are joined to each other whereby to have relatively a fixed relation, by an upper and a lower bar designated 23 and 24. Each disk 21 has a centrally disposed elongated slot 25, for the passage of the shafts 9 and 17 therethrough and a pair of shorter slots 26-26. located one to each side of the central slot and in parallelism therewith, said slots 2626 being provided for adjustably connecting the disks 21 to the disks 20 whereby to regulate the degree of the throw of the said eccentric disks 21.
The disks 2]. are fixedly connected by the screw pins and washers 27, as shown.
28 designates a yoke frame, the upper ends of which are bolted together to form a hanger 29 and the extreme upper end of which is bolted or otherwise fastened to the lower eccentric frame bar 24, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
30 designatesa foot lever fulcrumed at 31, and weighted to maintain it at its normal position, which engages a clutch member 40 slidably mounted on the shaft 9 held to rotate therewith by a key 9 on the shaft 9, see Fig. 4 and which coacts with the clutch hub 011 the wheel 12, and which is controlled by the rod 41 that pivotally connects with the foot lever, as shown.
On the lower end of the yoke frame 28 is hinged a table 31*, the outer end of which is supported by the diagonal adjustable brace members 32 which can be lengthened or shortened to hold the table at the desired angle.
By reason of the peculiar construction and arrange ment of parts shown and described, the roller, after passing the sheets or pack through the rolls, as soon as the sheets or pack pass out of said rolls and on to the table, by simply pressing on the foot lever to shift the clutch mechanism to throw the shafts 9 and 17 into gear, said shafts, by reason of the eccentric devices mounted on the disks 20-20, will raise the table and the pack thereon high enough above the rolls to allow the roller to grip the said pack, when pressure on foot lever is released and by reason of the chain wheel 4 be ing loosely mounted on the shaft 9 permits the table to be lowered to its normal position.
By making the eccentrics adjustable, the rise of the table can be governed to suit the convenience of the roller, and by providing the two eccentrics with their coacting shafts and shaft disks, a stable structure is provided for and a strong balanced lifting means is obtained.
Having thus described our invention, What We claim is, I
1. A plate catcher, comprising suitable supporting standards, a pair of parallel shafts mounted in the upper end thereof, an eccentric on each shaft, a frame connecting the eccentrics, a table pendently hung from the said frame, and drive gear connections which include a manually controlled clutch mechanism, for the purposes described. 7
2. A plate catcher, which comprises suitable supporting standards, a pair of shafts mounted therein, said shafts having endless chain connections, a sliding clutch on one of the saidshafts, a chain wheel having a clutch hub on the clutch carrying shaft, drive gear connections engaging with the said chain wheel, a disk fixedly mounted on each of the shafts, an eccentric adjustably mounted on each of the disks, a frame connecting said eccentrics, and a catcher table pendently supported from the frame, substantially as shown and described.
3. A plate catcher mechanism which comprises suitable standards, shafts'parallel with each other, journaled in thesaid standards, sa-id shafts having gear connections, one of the said shafts having a clutch hub, a sliding clutch on the said shaft opposing its clutch hub, means for adjusting said sliding clutch, a disk fixedly mounted on each of the shafts, an eccentric adjustably mounted on each disk, means for connecting the disks to cause them to rise and lower together and a catcher table pendently supported by said means to rise and lower with the eccentrics.
