Description

'MMO
OTIS W. STANFORD;
OF LEBANON, OHIO.
Letters Patent No. 85,866, dated .Tanna/ry 12, 1869.
IMPRO'VED BED-BOTTOM QW- The' Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
1'0 whom it 'ma/y concern :l K
Be it known that I, OTIs W. STANFORD, of Lebanon, Warrencounty, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Bed-Bottom; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof,
reference being had to the accompanying drawing,
making part of this specification. v
This invention 'relates to a simple, cheap, and effective form of 'bed-bottom, consisting essentially of a series of arched or cambered slats, whose ends are sprung into and confined by sockets in a pair of crossrails, into which sockets cushions, of. India rubber,-
have been previously inserted.
Figure 1 is' a perspective view of a bed-bottom embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section through said bottom.
'gure 3 is a partial. longitudinalsection, showing a modiication of my invention.
A A are the side rails;
vB B', the head and foot-rails;
C, central stretcher; and
D D', intermediate cross-rails, forming, collectively, a rectangular frame.
The head and foot-rails B B' have mortises or sock ets b, toreceive, first, cushions E, of India rubber, andy sion of a slat brings it in contact with the rail, as shown by dotted lines in iig. 2.
Prominent among several advantages of this over the customary Slat-bottoms, arey'lhe bottom being permanently arched, and coniined at its ends, is not liable to become sagged downward in the middle, as occurs with many other forms of bed-bottom -a tendency which entirely unts them for properly supporting the human body. Any depression of a slat, instead of causing it to Ysag throughout its length, as in the customary bottoms, is accompanied by a mere local depression, (see dotted line inv fig. 2,) so that the bottom becomes selfadaptive to every exure of the body.
The bottom being essentially of wood, can be made easily in any place, and at little expense.
It is remarkably light to handle, is easily repaired, and can be kept clean without difficulty.
In the modification shown in iig. 3, the foot-rail, instead of being framed permanently into the side rails, occupies slots therein, and is held in place by means of springs G. A
I claim herein as new, and of my inventionv The combination, with the cambered slats F, of the springs'or cushions E, arranged within the sockets b,
supporting the ends of said slats, as represented andv described, for the purposes set forth.
In testimony of which invention, I hereunto set my hand.
OTIS W. STANFORD. Witnesses:
` Guo. H. KNIGHT,
J AMES B. LAYMAN.
