EM L HUBER, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
STEERING-GEAR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J'une 25, 1907.
Application filed September 11,1905. Serial No. 277,239.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EMIL HUBER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Steering-Gear; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will'enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This nvention relates to steering gear for self propelled vehicles; it has for its Object an improved ap liance for turning the front wheels of the vel iicle to steer the same.
In the drawings :-Fi ure 1, is a perspec tive of the front axle with the steering gear connected therewith. Fig. 2, is a section of he shaft with the steering head connected therewith, shown in elevation, Fig. 3, is
a horizontal section or a section at right angles to the shaft. allel to theaxle, and vertical or along the axis of the shaft.
Any ordinary axle A, is used having ivotally connected thereto the usual w eel axles 2 and 3, which oscillate on vertical pivots 4 and 5, and are oscillated by means of the$crank-ar1ns 6 and 7 and a rod 8, which connects the crank arms 6 and 7 I attach an actuating device to oneof the arms as the arm 6, by a pivot connection 1, which joins a reach rod 9 to the arnr fi. The reach rod 9 is preferably made in two parts-Wand 9 connected by a joint 10, and by a swivel 11. The part 9 ol 't the reach rod extends to the interior'of the housing I), and is provided near its terminal with three rollers 11, 12 and 13.
The extreme inner roller 11, engages on the inside of a hanging scroll 14, the inner-end of which engages between the roller 11, and the roller 12; the outer end of the scroll 14 Fig. 4, is a section par-- engages between the roller 12 and the roller 13. The movement of the reach rod 9 is limited and it is not generally necessary to make even a complete rotation of the head upon which the scroll hangs. A single rotation of the head upon which the scroll hangs shifts the reach rod a distance equal to the distance between the adjacent ends of the scroll, or nearly that distance lacking only an amount that is equal to the clearance between the scroll head and the wheel 12. The casing 15, of the scroll is hinged to a bracket 16, by a hinge 17.so. as to permit relative motion of the casing and axle. The stem 18 rises through a slot 19 in the vehicle body and terminates with a hand wheel 20. The casing 15 being pivoted to the cross bar, may move relative thereto, so as to permit a relative movement of the hand wheel 20 and the cross bar.
' What I claim is 1. In connection with the cross bar of a vehicle, provided with pivoted wheel axles. at the ends thereof, the casing pivotallyconnected' thereto, a scroll cam in said casing, a reach rod and rollers thereon engaging said scroll cam, said reach rod being ivotally connected to the crank arm on t e wheel axle, substantially as described.
2; In connection with a cross bar of a vehicle provided with pivoted wheel axles at the ends thereof, a casing ivotally oonnect ed to said cross bar, a scro l cam in said casing, a reach rod engaging said scroll cam, and a crank arm on the wheel-axle, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In-testimony whereof, I, sign this specification in. the presence of two witnesses.
EMIL HUBER. Witnesses I Lo'r'm LEE HAYTON, ELLIOTT J. STODDARD.
